Does Harley Davidson Make an E-Bike?

It might come as a surprise, but the company behind the iconic motorcycle does make e-bikes (albeit through a third party). Serial 1 is an e-bike company owned by Harley Davidson and it offers a range of bikes to suit your cycling needs.

Electric bikes are big business. Sales are growing and are expected to one day overtake the sales of more traditional bikes. That would mean that the rise of e-bikes is more of a revolution, changing the way that we cycle. With all of this in mind, it’s natural that large companies like Harley Davidson want in on the action.

What is Harley Davidson Electric Bike Called?

A Harley Davidson electric bike is technically called a Series 1 bike since this is the Davidson-owned company that produces them. The most expensive Series 1 bike is the limited edition MOSH/TRIBUTE, which is available now and is the flagship bike of the brand.

It isn’t the only Series 1 bike available, though. Despite the company being in its infancy, e-bike lovers are spoiled for choice. There are four models available, each with a different specification, price tag and use case. For Harley Davidson enthusiasts (or just curious cyclists eager to see what the legendary company can bring to e-bikes) that’s great news – you should be able to find a bike that suits your needs.

Serial 1

Serial 1 is an e-bike company owned by Harley Davidson. It’s still quite new (founded in 2018) but has quickly grown to prominence, in part due to its association with the motorcycle brand. All bikes are designed and engineered at the Harley Davidson headquarters in Milwaukee.

The company has become more independent over time. Although Harley Davidson still owns shares, Serial 1 has gained a degree of autonomy and operates independently to develop e-bikes. Unlike some other electric bike companies, Serial 1 designs its bikes with ease of use in mind.

These machines are predominantly aimed at non-cyclists and people who want to replace cars as their main form of transportation.

Is Serial 1 Owned by Harley Davidson?

Serial 1 is owned (“powered” according to the website) by Harley Davidson, and this relationship is about more than just brand recognition. Not only does Serial 1 gain access to the Harley Davidson HQ for design and development, but they all use Harley Davidson garages for services.

These electric bikes are also sold at Harley Davidson dealerships across the EU and America, making Serial 1 one of the biggest players in the e-bike market almost by default. The partnership with Harley Davidson has allowed them to source high quality materials, employ cutting edge production methods and charge a higher price point. Harley Davidson has undoubtedly helped Serial 1 gain traction in the market, but the company operates somewhat independently and will forge its own path into the e-bike future.

Where Are Serial 1 Bikes Made?

Serial 1 bikes are made at the Harley Davidson headquarters in Milwaukee. That means every step of the production process – from design through to engineering – takes place on Harley Davidson premises. That’s a big advantage for a new company entering the market, and it assures buyers of quality (just make sure to take some security precautions!).

Moreover, Serial 1 is also able to use Harley Davidson garages for repair and routine services. These bikes are even stocked and sold through Harley Davidson dealerships. Brand recognition like this has undoubtedly encouraged more people to take the plunge and try an electrical bike for the first time.

How Much is a Harley Electric Bike

Harley Davidson electric bikes start at €3999 for an entry-level machine, but that price tag climbs to €6300 for a top-of-the-range bike. These e-bikes aren’t designed to be budget entries. They’re premium machines using high quality materials, and they’re designed to last.

The entry model MOSH/CITY opens the range at €3999. Next on the list comes the RUSH/CTY STEP THRU and RUSH/CTY (both €5200) followed by the top-of-the-range MOSH/TRIBUTE which costs €6300. Expensive as these models might seem, they’re designed to be a lifelong investment and manufactured as such.

Serial 1 MOSH E-Bike

The Serial 1 MOSH is the company’s flagship offering. It’s an impressive machine featuring a top speed assist of 25 km/h and a striking design that manages to balance classic looks with a more modern twist.

Simplicity lies at the heart of the Serial 1 ethos and the MOSH e-bike is no different. Its design is streamlined, ergonomic and ultra-sleek. A spring-loaded saddle provides additional support over longer distances and bright, LED headlights on the front, tail and brake lights ensure safety in even the murkiest conditions.

It does, however, only come in medium and large frame sizes. If you’re looking for something smaller (and not to mention cheaper) for zipping through city traffic, then the MOSH/CITY is a fantastic option.

Serial 1 RUSH E-Bike

The RUSH comes in two models. The RUSH/CTY STEP THRU comes with a more streamlined, step through design ideal for commutes. The RUSH/CTY is more powerful, comes in larger frame sizes and is designed for longer rides.

Other than those differences, these e-bikes share the same price tag, the same carbon belt drive and many other smaller features including a lockable glove box, integrated racks and integrated fenders. Both feature LED headlights, brake lights and tail lights so you won’t have to worry about cycling in low light conditions.

As a mid-range option, the RUSH strikes a balance between the cheaper MOSH/CITY and the top-of-the-range MOSH/TRIBUTE.

Serial 1 SWITCH/MTN E-Bike

The newest entry to the range is the SWITCH/MTN. As the name suggests, this is an e-bike designed for mountain trails and rugged terrain. You can expect a tough and durable machine capable of tackling the harshest landscape.

That translates into a mid-engined e-bike with a 529Wh lithium-ion battery and a substantially lower centre of gravity than other bikes. Mass is centralised with plenty of torque, making this an ideal choice for conquering steep inclines and rocky/uneven terrain.

Best of all, the SWITCH/MTN features four ride modes. Eco mode is designed for flat/gentle terrain, tour mode blends battery and manual power for mixed conditions and sport mode is intended for rolling hills. Last but not least, boost mode provides extra power for steep inclines, soft/sandy ground or anywhere that requires a shot of power.
