You jump out of bed, looking forward to that bike ride, throw back the curtains and… the sky is grey, rain pattering the windows.

But, that isnโ€™t going to put you off, right?

After all, there is no such thing as bad weather when you are well prepared and have your waterproof cycling gear ready. But will your electric bike be able to cope with that downpour?

Can You Use Electric Bikes in the Rain?

Yes, you can use electric bikes can be used in the rain. E-bikes are engineered to be robust and rideable in all weather conditions. Whether you are riding mountain trails or a regular city commute, the components of electric bikes are designed to protect against water getting inside the motor and battery.

Are Electric Bikes Waterproof?

Electric bikes are water-resistant, but they are not waterproof. The components are well protected against the elements, sealed within a water-resistant casing, but they are not 100% impenetrable to water, especially around the wire connection points.

That means you can still relive your childhood, riding in the rain and splashing through puddles, but it is not a good idea to ride through deep water. Using an e-bike like a submarine would be an expensive mistake If you submerge your bike, the battery and motor are at risk of being damaged

So, when you get back from a downpour, give your bike some TLC. Wipe it down with a dry cloth to remove any water. Take special care around the areas where electrical wiring meets the internal electronics, such as the motor and LCD, as this is where water can get inside.

Clean any mud off the chain and use a water displacer to ensure no water remains before lubricating. It is important to make sure that the bike is dry before you lube, otherwise, you might trap water inside.

Can You Leave an Electric Bike Outside in the Rain?

Electric bikes can be left in the rain for short periods of time, but it is not advisable to do this frequently. As is the case with non-electric bikes, leaving an e-bike outside and exposed to the elements will enable moisture to seep through the casings and begin to rust the internal components.

If you want your bicycle (regardless of whether it is electric or not) to stay in good shape for years to come, you should keep it dry, clean and well maintained as much as possible.

Electric Bike Rain Cover

Ideally, the best place to store your e-bike is indoors, in a dry garage or shed. Leaving an e-bike outside for long periods can leave it susceptible to moisture, which can potentially cause damage to the electrical components. Also, just like an ordinary cycle, the chain and bearings can become rusty if left in damp conditions.

If leaving your bike outside is unavoidable, it is vital to keep it protected from the elements. Investing in a good quality rain cover will keep water off your bike. Along with regular maintenance, this will help your e-bike remain in good condition for many years to come.
