Bikes come in all different shapes and sizes, and some incredible designs over the years make you question whether a bike is just a mode of transport or a form of art.

We think they can be both, so we’ve put together a list of eight beautiful bikes we’re obsessed with right now, including past and present bicycles that we think are really something.

Cannondale SuperSix EVO Cannondale + Rapha + Palace Hi-MOD Special Edition Road Frameset

1. Cannondale SuperSix EVO Cannondale + Rapha + Palace Hi-MOD Special Edition Road Frameset

I know this is just a frameset, okay, but hear me out on this one.

The beautiful bike occurred when Cannondale teamed up with the iconic skateboard and streetwear brand Palace to add their flare to the SuperSix Evo frameset, the outcome is something that should be hung up in the Louvre, no doubt.

Absolutely no one can tell me this isn’t beautiful. Maybe not to everyone’s taste, but just such an iconic frameset and so visually striking

You may also recognize this frame, and that’s because this design was used by the men’s professional road cycling team, EF Education – EasyPost, at the Tour de France in 2023.

A real treat for the eyes.

2. Lotus 108 Track Bike

It’s not a bike that can be bought on the market but another iconic bike, this time from 1992, with only four being made.

This amazing track bike was made by the British car company Lotus and was ridden to victory by Brit Chris Boardman in the 4000m Individual Pursuit at the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympics.

Aesthetically, this bike is so futuristic-looking that even in 2024, it could be a prototype not yet in production.

It’s a real two-wheeled spaceship.

VanMoof S5 E-Bike

3. VanMoof S5 E-Bike

It is a beautifully simplistic electric bike that for sure deserves a spot on our list.

If you live in a busy city, you’ve likely seen one of these zooming around your local streets. They are very popular indeed, and their look is definitely a big reason for this.

The motor is discreet, so there’s no ugly bulkiness from the electric side of things, which, of course, only adds to the beauty of this bike.

Although it’s available in only two muted colors, gray and dark gray, this e-bike really is a minimalist’s dream: a bike whose looks and color will not clash with whatever fabulous outfit you’re wearing.

Specialized Hotwalk Carbon Balance Bike

4. Specialized Hotwalk Carbon Balance Bike

Okay, I know what you are thinking, and no, it isn’t for adults, but a balance bike for children and toddlers who are learning to balance pre-pedals.

In my opinion, this just had to be added because of its amazing design, which is largely due to the carbon fiber it’s made from, allowing the frame to be made from one mold, creating a streamlined, minimalist dream

Now, for a child’s balance bike, it is pricey, but look how beautiful it is, it would even look super cool hung up on a wall as art.

Just imagine your child zooming around on it outside and then hanging it above the fireplace when they get back. It’s iconic.

CARBO™ Folding E-Bike MODEL X

5. CARBO™ Folding E-Bike MODEL X

Perhaps you didn’t think that a folding bike, let alone an electric folding bike, would be on this list, but think again.  The Carbo is impressively simplistic and stylish.

As you may know, folding bikes tend to look a little clumsy and messy due to the nature of the frame, but not this one. The design is sleek and all-black, stealth mode activated.

Likewise, it is electric, but from just one glance, you wouldn’t know because the motor is small and tucked away, adding to the simplistic yet striking look.

Specialized Sirrus 6.0 Hybrid Bike

6. Specialized Sirrus 6.0 Hybrid Bike

Just one look will tell you why this hybrid has made this list. I mean, just look at it.

This futurist bike is truly iconic, the perfect response to anyone who thinks hybrids are boring. With the interesting frame design, it would not look out of place in the Tate Modern

Made from carbon fiber and designed for everyday use, this leisure bike will undoubtedly turn heads when being ridden to work or out in the country lanes

Calfee Design Bamboo Mountain Bike

7. Calfee Design Bamboo Mountain Bike

Okay, now, I know what some of you may say. You may personally think this is a little odd and maybe not the most aesthetically pleasing bike you’ve ever seen, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder…

And given the ever-growing concern for the environment, more sustainable options for materials are amazing. Hence, a bike made from bamboo is a beautiful thing: a gift from Mother Nature if you were.

What I personally love about this bike is the natural vibe. Because the frame is literally made of bamboo, you can’t really get more natural than that.

Now that is beautiful, a really unique bike that helps make the world greener and more sustainable.

Pinarello GREVIL F9 - SHIMANO GRX DI2 Gravel Bike

8. Pinarello GREVIL F9 – SHIMANO GRX DI2 Gravel Bike

You didn’t think we could have a most beautiful list and not include a Pinarello, right?

Of course, the last bike we have is their F9 carbon fiber gravel bike, which is Chef’s Kiss, a really stunning piece of engineering brilliance from Italy.

I’ve honestly never seen one of their bikes that didn’t look like it had been lovingly crafted rather than just drawn up and rushed into production; they really are made and designed with passion and love, and my, does it show.

What really sets this bike apart from others is the angles of the frameset, from the forks to the sloping top tube angles and rear stays; it really is just a beautiful bike.

Did we miss any good ones on our list? Let us know what bikes you think are the most beautiful.

Bikes, as great as they are, don’t have to be boring. Hopefully, our list includes a wide range of stunning bikes that you can admire and, who knows, maybe even purchase.

Although the world of bikes is still very male-dominated in terms of products available on the market, there are some great women-specific items and hacks out there to improve comfort when riding a bike for women.

These women-specific cycling products and hacks are not just for lycra-clad women who want to ride fast on skinny tires.

Thankfully, there’s a great way to ensure maximum comfort regardless of what bike you ride or why you choose pedal power.

These tips often won’t break the bank either!

Women bike fit

1. Consider a Bike Fit

Okay, I know we just said it won’t break the bank, and this one may be expensive, but it could be completely life-altering.

Therefore, the cost is very much worth it.

Bike fitting is available all over the world and is also available for all styles of bikes.

Essentially, a professional bike fitter will fit you to your bike and adjust it to fit you and your specific needs after a consultation covering your flexibility and issues you may have.

A bike fit will also make you more efficient at pedaling and getting more out of your current bike.

Another great aspect of a bike fit commonly complained about by women is the saddle fitting.

Bike fits often advise on a saddle that suits your body and needs.

Bicycle seat

2. Comfy Saddle

The last point brings us to our next top tip: finding a saddle that you find comfy.

What others find comfortable doesn’t necessarily matter, as women’s bodies differ greatly. Therefore, it is very important to test different saddles out.

But a comfy saddle that suits you will make a whole world of difference.

No one likes to be numb or sore in the nether regions, especially while riding a bike!

But you don’t have to, and many saddle companies and bike shops will let you test saddles and offer saddle fitting services.

Therefore, there’s no excuse; you don’t have to suffer in silence. Everyone in the cycling industry knows how common saddle issues are, so you can rest assured that your issues will be handled carefully and taken seriously.

Padded cycling shorts

3. Comfy Padded Shorts That Suit You

Moving swiftly on to another cracking piece of advice that your bottom will be very grateful for is finding a comfy pair of padded cycling shorts that suit you.

Online bike retailers can be a great place to start, but going into a local bike shop is also a good way to get a feel for the materials and see the padding, also referred to as a chamois, so that you can see the thickness and thus which brand may suit you.

All brands differ in terms of the padding they offer, both in thickness and pattern, so it’s recommended to look within the shorts to see if they are thick enough for your needs.

Once again, it’s important to reinforce that women are all built differently, making padded cycling short selection, just like saddle choice, incredibly specific to the individual.

Couple your chosen pair of padded cycling shorts with a comfy saddle, and numbness and bottom pain will be a thing of the past.

women wearing cycling gloves

4. Padded Gloves

Now for potentially our lowest cost tip: padded gloves.

Many women notice pain in the palms of their hands when riding a bike, which is why padded gloves are another great tip for ensuring maximum comfort.

Padded gloves can come in a range of sizes and designs. Some are women-specific, and others are unisex; as long as they fit, the gender specification doesn’t matter.

Some are short-fingered (often called mitts), which are great for warmer climates, and there are also long-fingered gloves, which are more suited to cooler climates.

The padding in these gloves has been explicitly positioned to reduce numbness and provide a cushion for the palms of your hands.

This padding is great at reducing the impact of vibrations from the road that occur when riding along.

Not to mention that padded gloves also provide warmth, which can help maximize comfort.

Sports bra

5. The Right Sports Bra

Okay, this one may seem uncommon, but sports bras may be one of the most overlooked comfort aspects of women’s cycling or any sport.

Finding a sports bra that fits you correctly and gives you the support you need for your chosen activity will make a difference in comfort.

This is true for both women on either end of the spectrum in terms of breast size.

Sports bras are often too restrictive, negatively impacting breathing or not offering the right support.

Therefore, finding the right sports bra to suit you and your needs can be life-altering when it comes to maximizing comfort.

Many sports bra brands now come with size charts that match up with standard bra sizing; therefore, getting measured properly and matching that to your sizing and support needs should ensure you find the sports bra you need.

Women shouldn’t experience pain or discomfort when doing something as joyous as riding a bike.

Small changes can result in some really drastic changes.

Therefore, these five tips for maximum comfort will help you be pain-free when out on two wheels, no matter your riding style.

Countless women worldwide who ride bikes are probably used to hearing certain annoying comments about their bike and/or cycling knowledge.

You know the type of comments: mansplaining about how to do simple mechanics or unsolicited advice that was not wanted.

They may initially seem comical, but they can become annoying and infuriating after a while.

Well, enough is enough, we say.

If you are someone who does this, STOP.

If you are someone who encounters this rubbish, then we are sure you can relate to our list of the top 6 Things Female Cyclists Are Tired of Hearing.

Please let us know if we have missed anything and how you deal with this nonsense!

female cyclist bicycle seat

1. ‘You Need to Put Your Saddle Up / Down’

Wow, I didn’t realize that you were a bike-fitting professional.

Stop telling women how they should have their saddle and what height it should be. Unless they are asking for advice, this information is not wanted.

If women had an issue, they would vocalize it and ask for your opinion or go to a professional bike fitter to get advice from someone qualified to do so.

So, if you have not been asked, don’t say. Women don’t need more mansplaining in society. Kindness, sure. But condescending remarks on how women should use their own possessions are boring.

Imagine someone told you every day that your glasses didn’t suit your face, even though you love those glasses, and picked them out yourself. You would be annoyed and fed up with the comments because it’s no one’s business.

Much like women’s preferred saddle height isn’t yours. Simple.

female cyclist with bicycle

2. ‘You Need a Different Size Bike’

Another super annoying remark that is seldom asked for.

Let’s spell this one out real clear: unless a woman has remarked that she is really uncomfortable on a bike, leave her be.

Sure, maybe the bike is the wrong size to you, but if she is comfortable and can ride it, then there isn’t any issue.

Women are more than capable of researching bike sizing advice or asking industry professionals for advice if they need it.

So, if you haven’t been asked, don’t say.

Once again, no one wants your unsolicited advice.

female cyclist fast

3. ‘You’re Fast, For a Woman’

Ouch.

It is potentially one of the most condescending comments female cyclists hear.

It’s not the compliment you may feel it is.

Telling a woman that she’s fast despite her biological sex is incredibly rude. What does it matter?

Women can ride their bikes at their own pace, and being fast or not isn’t something anyone needs to validate.

So leave them be.

Let women ride at their own pace and enjoy riding their bikes.

Grown women can decide the speed they want to ride at, and if they want to know the speed, they can check their bike computer, which is far more accurate than you.

If not, leave her alone. K. Thanks. Bye.

female cyclist

4. ‘You should change gear’

Another classic piece of unsolicited advice that women often complain of hearing.

Once again, it’s up to the individual what gear they prefer riding in.

Whoever you are, if you are comfortable and enjoying yourself, that’s all that matters.

Even if someone is spinning a lot or sloughing, they should research or seek advice if they feel they need it.

So if they haven’t asked, don’t say it.

Female cyclist

5. Anything Surrounding Body Type

Oh, sorry, I didn’t realize women have to look a certain way in the world of patriarchy to enjoy riding a bike!?

Any comment on body composition, build, height, weight loss, weight gain: women are tired of it. Don’t say it; don’t comment on women’s muscular legs or how slim they may be.

Women’s bodies, their choice. It’s nothing to do with anyone. Let women enjoy riding their bikes and being happy without people commenting on their aesthetics and body composition.

It’s none of your business.

female cyclist style

6. ‘You Can’t Wear That While Riding Your Bike’

Errr… Yes, they can.

Whatever anyone chooses to wear—lycra, a suit, waterproofs, a skirt—it’s all cycling kit.

Women should wear what they want and in what they feel comfortable.

Once again, it’s not your business and not your issue. So leave them to look fabulous and feel great while doing what they love and getting from A to B.

Expressing individual style and feelings through what women wear is their decision.

Not yours.

This isn’t PE class at school, and there’s no set uniform. This is the real world, so mind your own business.

Honestly, people need to mind their own business.

What you can do to avoid being that person is only give advice when asked.

DO NOT comment on people’s bodies.

Be kind and help promote the great activity that is cycling!

Making comments like these can put women off cycling, and that’s really not okay.

Man cycling in the snow

During the winter, temperatures drop, and the weather can become rainy, snowy, and icy, making the roads and paths a little tricky and sometimes deadly to navigate while riding your bike.

But rest assured, we have some great tips on staying safe while out riding in the winter.

Because let’s be real, who can go a whole winter without riding their bike outside? Not us, that’s for sure!

Follow these seven winter cycling tips that could save your life:

Fat tire bicycle in the snow

1. Opt for an Off-Road Bike

As much as you may love your beloved road bike or city bike, it may not be the best option for winter riding if the ground is covered in snow or ice as the tires are often slick, meaning way more prone to skidding and slipping out, causing you to get hurt.

Instead, we highly suggest riding an off-road bike, such as gravel, mountain, fat, or cyclocross.

These bikes are equipped with thicker threaded tires, and the frames provide the clearance to take such tires and the snow that it may throw up.

Although this may be financially unviable, if you have a hybrid, you can add threaded tires to help grip in the winter conditions.

studded tires on bicycle

2. Use Studded Tires When Riding in Snow and Ice

Already popular in the Scandinavian countries and North America, studded tires can be a total game changer for grip during the winter.

Just like normal tires, they have thread, but they also have the benefit of metal studs to help grip when the ground is snowy and icy.

Of course, these can help prevent accidents and allow you to continue as normal during the colder months.

layered clothing for cycling in the cold

3. Make Sure to Layer Up

As annoying as this may be, your mum was right for all those years: you need to layer up when riding in the winter.

An efficient layering system can be the difference between withstanding the cold and hypothermia in extreme cases.

When selecting a layering system, opting for materials such as merino wool or windstopper technologies can help to keep you efficiently protected from the elements.

Items to include may be a sling sleeve merino wool base layer, ear warmers, neck tube, wool socks, overshoes, thermal bib tights, long sleeve jerseys, soft shell jacket, insulated outer jacket, insulated gilet, and of course, a great set of thick gloves.

And yes, of course, you may overheat a little if you wear too much, but it’s always better to be too hot and take off layers than get sick due to cold weather exposure.

At the end of the day, you may incur a mechanical issue and need to wait around in the snow for assistance, making your layering system a vital part of your winter riding.

Bicycle on ice

4. Be Careful around Corners

Imagine you are on the way to work, happy as Larry, maneuvering around a corner, then suddenly, you find your wheels have slipped from beneath you because you took a corner too fast, and you’re on your bum in the middle of the bike path

Of course, this would be majorly embarrassing, but it’s common when the tarmac gets icy that corners especially become a death trap.

Taking your time and being more aware: reducing speed and proceeding with caution will ultimately help to reduce the risk of this occurring

Because who wants to turn up to the office with a hole in their trousers from hitting the deck on the way to work? We could never.

grit on bicycle path

5. Stick to the Paths and Roads That Have Been Gritted

If you took the advice in the first tip, then you can smugly skip this one, as your off-road machine doesn’t need gritted roads, but if you are heading out on your bike with more slick tires, looking at your route is important.

Before setting off, check to see which roads and bike paths have been gritted.

Main roads will usually be the first to be treated, but many local authorities offer residents ways to check their local roads during the icy spells.

Because grit helps to prevent the roads and paths from getting slippy, it’s a good idea to keep to the roads and paths that have been treated.

high-visibility clothing

6. Choose High-Visibility Accessories

For all road users and bike-pathgoers, the visibility often declines when the weather worsens in the winter.

This can, of course, be dangerous, even deadly, if others or you are hard to see during foggy or misty weather.

For your safety and others, we recommend opting for high-visibility clothing. We aren’t saying you must forfeit your fashion identity and go full fluro, but brighter colors and reflective materials are brilliant.

Another great accessory addition is a set of front and back lights, these will ideally include a front light that is bright enough to help you to see when the visibility drops or it becomes dark.

It is also recommended that the rear light be set to flashing, as it is easier for other cyclists and bike path users to see a flashing light than a steady one.

7. Allow for Greater Stopping Distances

Remember that when the temperatures drop, the roads often become icy, meaning your tires may not react as well when stopping, causing you to rear-end the cyclists or vehicles in front, which can be fatal.

Also, you can start to skid out, leaving your tire side up in the road.

Drivers can’t always see well (that’s not your fault but can be your issue if you’ve come a cropper), so leaving extra stopping room can also help to slow the traffic behind you so they have a chance to see if you do happen to slip out.

Now that we have reviewed our seven winter cycling tips, which could help save your life, we hope you feel prepared for your next winter cycling adventure!

If you have already implemented the tips above, what other advice would you add to help make winter cycling safer and more enjoyable?

Hybrid bikes make the perfect all round bicycle because they are more robust than a road bike but equally have capacities and the comfort given by a conventional mountain bike.

Not only that but a lot of hybrid bikes on the market also have wide tyres for comfort and stability. As well as front suspension forks. The addition of both features allows for the hybrids to ride on a range of terrain.

This is choice and versatility is what makes them so popular, especially with female riders. One bike can be both a fabulous commuter and a weekend mode of transport. A hybrid really is the do-it-all.

Well priced and versatile, what’s not to love?

Should You Buy a Hybrid Bicycle?

When it comes down to if you should buy a hybrid bicycle, only you will know for sure. But if you want versatile and well-priced: yes, you should.

A hybrid is often more reliable and much easier to maintain than other bikes. This is because the components are often basic and straightforward in design. Therefore it’s also less likely to go wrong: there’s less to go wrong.

Likewise, if you don’t have a huge budget but want a bike, a hybrid is great. With regards to e-bikes and road bikes, you can get so much more for your money. For example, all of our selections are under £1000.

Additionally, a hybrid is great for both leisure usage and commuting. Two birds with one stone. Not to mention, one bike for everything is more space efficient when it comes to storage.

Cyclist at red light

It’s no secret that bikes often have to share the road with cars due to a lack of protected bike lanes. Some places in Europe tend to be better than other with such infrastructure. However, what we want to focus on is if can cyclists go through red lights and do bikes have to stop at stop signs?

Do Bicycles Have to Follow Traffic Laws?

Do bicycles have to follow traffic laws? In the UK, the Highway Code states in section 69 that “Traffic signs and traffic light signals apply to all road users. Cyclists must obey them”. Which is pretty to the point and easy to understand.

Over in the USA, in all states bike riders are expected to follow the same traffic laws. Therefore it’s best to check the traffic laws depending on the state as they may vary, but overall cyclists have to obey the same laws.

With regards to laws in Australia, the same is true: bicycles have to follow the same traffic laws as vehicles.

However in mainland Europe, some countries such as the Netherlands, things are different. Instead there are often special bicycle traffic signs which must be followed. Therefore when riding in Europe, it’s best to check the rules specific to the country.

Bicycles stop signs red lights traffic laws in the UK

Cycling Traffic Laws UK

  • You MUST obey all traffic signs and traffic light signals.
  • Ride on the left side of the road.
  • Traffic signs and traffic light signals apply to all road users: cyclists must obey them.
  • At night your cycle MUST have white front and red rear lights lit.
  • You should not pass a horse on their left.
  • You MUST NOT cycle on a pavement.
  • Most bus lanes may be used by cyclists as indicated on signs.
  • You should be considerate of other road users, particularly blind and partially sighted pedestrians, and horse riders.
  • You should look all around to make sure it is safe before moving away from the kerb, when pulling out to overtake or to pass stationary vehicles, or when turning at junctions or stopping.
  • Do not ride across equestrian crossings, as they are for horse riders only.
  • Cyclists should look out and be prepared to stop for pedestrians crossing the track informally as well as at these designated points.
  • When approaching a junction on the left, watch out for vehicles turning in front of you, out of or into the side road.
  • When turning into or out of a side road, you should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross.
  • Must not ride on the motorway at any point.
  • Any electric bike that does not meet the EAPC rules is classed as a motorcycle or moped and needs to be registered and taxed.

Bicycles stop signs red lights laws in USA

Cycling Traffic Laws US

  • You must follow the same laws as vehicles in the state.
  • Ride on the right side of the road.
  • Cyclists under 18 must wear a helmet when riding a bike.
  • Every road user is entitled to the width of lane they need .
  • When moving lane you must yield to the road user already in said lane.
  • If lanes are big enough for bicycles and cars (around 14 foot) then they can share the lane.
  • If the lanes are not big enough to share, cyclists can ride in the middle.
  • Use the farthest right lane for the direction you are going.

Bicycles stop signs red lights traffic laws in Australia

Cycling Traffic Laws Australia

  • You must follow the same laws as vehicles.
  • Must wear a helmet (unless there is a medical, cultural, or religious reasons not to).
  • Must not hold onto a moving vehicle.
  • Must ride on the left.
  • Must not walk and animal on a lead while riding.
  • Must not ride more than two abreast and no more than 1.5 metres apart.
  • Must have the correct lights when riding at night.
  • Must have one hand on the handlebars at all times.
  • Must follow the cycling specific laws dependent on the state/territory as they can vary.

Cycling Traffic Laws in Europe

Cycling Traffic Laws Europe

  • Some European countries expect you to follow the same traffic laws as cars.
  • In some European countries, cycle helmets have become mandatory in the last few years (Malta, Sweden, Slovenia and Czech Republic for children up to 15, Spain cyclists have to wear a helmet outside urban areas except when going uphill).
  • Cyclists are required to use cycle lanes and tracks. They may not, however, use motorways and similar roads.
  • When walking and pushing their bicycles on foot, cyclists are classified as pedestrians and may therefore use the pavement.
  • They must keep to the right of the carriageway (to the left in the United Kingdom and Ireland) and give an appropriate arm signal when they wish to turn.
  • In principle, cyclists may not ride more than one abreast. Some countries however introduced exceptions to this rule; for instance, cyclists may ride two abreast where the carriageway is wide enough, where cycle traffic is heavy, on cycle tracks, etc.
  • In principle, cyclists may not ride more than one abreast. Some countries however introduced exceptions to this rule; for instance, cyclists may ride two abreast where the carriageway is wide enough, where cycle traffic is heavy, on cycle tracks, etc.
  • Denmark, children under the age of 6 are not allowed to go by bicycle unless they are escorted by a person who is 15 years old or older.
  • Germany, children must be at least 8 years old with the same provisions as in Denmark.
  • Poland, children over 10 years must have passed a test to be allowed on a road.
  • Spain and France, it is illegal to ride a bike or drive a car while using headphones/earphones.

Can Cyclists Go Through Red Lights?

When it comes to whether or not cyclists can go through red lights the majority of laws across the board make it clear that this is not allowed.

In the UK and Australia as well as most of the United States, the answer to do bikes have to stop at red lights is yes. This is because traffic laws are applied to both vehicles and bicycles. Therefore they have to stop and not ride through them.

However, in Idaho, a law passed in 1982 allows cyclists to treat a red light as a stop sign. Meaning they have to stop and yield to any traffic. Some small cities in Colorado have adopted similar rules. But overall in the US, this is not allowed.

With regards to Europe, it can vary. However in general red lights should be stopped at. For example, in Paris and some other French cities, there are specific rules for bikes depending on the signage which allows them to jump red lights.

Many bike lanes across the world also have their own traffic lights, as commonly found in London, specifically for bikes, which should be followed over the main road traffic lights if you are riding on the bike path. So, can bikes run red lights? Overall, no, not often.

Do Bicycles Have to Stop at Stop Signs?

Another common question is whether to not bikes have to stop at stop signs. Just with other vehicles and road users, in the UK, Australia, Europe and most of the US: yes. You have to stop at stop signs.

The places where this law varies is Minnesota. In May 2023, they passed a law that meant bicycle users don’t have to stop but instead have to treat a stop sign as a yield sign instead.

Other states in the US are also looking to follow suit by passing similar laws. Therefore it’s best to check on the state and keep up to date with any changes that may occur. But overall, you must stop at a stop sign if you are riding a bicycle.

The benefits of cycling for women

Please note: This article discusses mental health and self-harm.

It’s well documented that moving your body is essential to health and wellness. Cycling is one of the best forms of exercise (we are, of course, entirely biased).

Noticeably, more women have been turning to two wheels to get out and about as a mode of transport or for leisure reasons.

We therefore, decided to look into the benefits women can expect from cycling.

cycling is easy on the joints

1. Cycling is easy on the joints

Cycling is a great sport when it comes to impact. This is because it’s a low impact sport.

According to an article from Everyday Health that focused on Joint Pain and Women, “women are more apt than men to have conditions that cause joint pain,” adding, “Women are more prone to osteoarthritis of the knee.” Raising the concern that women are likely better suited to low-impact sports such as cycling.

Unlike running, your joint won’t be constantly bashing against the ground with every movement. Instead the action of pedalling is much kinder to your joints.

With this being said, if you have issues with your joints, such as aches and pains or even more severe injuries, cycling is a good choice.

cycling is an excellent cardiovascular exercise for women

2. Cycling can be beneficial during and after the menopause

For many women, menopause can be debilitating and is often an overlooked part of women’s medicine and healthcare.

But according to Dr Samantha Wild, “While everyone needs to do cardiovascular exercise, women are at particular risk of heart disease after menopause.” Following on to state that cycling is a brilliant example of the cardiovascular exercise women can do to help prevent such health issues.

Dr. Samantha Wild also stated: “Cardiovascular exercise can also increase your energy levels, boost your mood, and enhance your sleep quality,” all of which are issues women during and post-menopause may experience.

However, if you are really struggling with symptoms due to the menopause, seeking medical support is also very much recommended. Exercise can help but likely won’t be the sole remedy. But can be a great way to help ease symptoms naturally.

regular cycling improve your physical health but your ability to carry out daily activities, too

3. Cycling improves overall fitness

Now it won’t come as a huge surprise that riding a bike regularly will help improve the overall fitness of a person, regardless of their gender or who they identify as. But given how important this factor is, it just has to be added.

Riding a bike regularly will help women feel fitter in general by improving the strength of the cardiovascular system. This of course will take time so isn’t a quick fix. But over time, the improved fitness is definitely noticeable.

This is great for allowing you to ride with greater ease and further as your endurance improves. But also in everyday life, which will help with work and general life: you will notice you become fatigued less quickly and see other indicators like a lower resting heart rate.

Therefore, not only will your cycling ability improve physically but your ability to carry out daily activities, what’s not to love?

cycling is a really fantastic activity for those wanting to maintain a healthy body weight

4. Cycling helps to maintain a healthy body weight

Something that can be a complicated and sensitive topic for many women is body weight. First, I want to state that everyone comes in all shapes and sizes, and some of us carry more body fat than others.

Not only that, but after injuries, illness, or due to medication, body fat can accumulate but become difficult to budge.

But cycling for women can be a really fantastic option for those wanting to find an activity to help maintain a healthy body weight. Cycling is a fun and varied sport, unlike other sports that aren’t very exciting nor can get you from A-B.

Instead of just sitting on the rowing machine in a gym, jumping on your bike allows you to see sights and ride to places you need to be, such as work or to the shops, while still helping you to maintain a healthy body weight.

Therefore, as calories in versus calories out (used) can be improved by exercising, in theory, you can eat more and keep the same healthy body weight bracket (as weight does, of course, naturally fluctuate) by riding your bike more.

cycling can be a brilliant way to ease mental health issues and improve the wellbeing of women

5. Cycling has a range of mental health benefits

With mental health cases on the rise, rates of self-harm among young women have tripled since 1993, and women are twice as likely to be diagnosed with anxiety as men, according to the charity Mental Health Foundation, it’s becoming increasingly crucial that outlets are found and promoted to help people with their mental health.

Although medical intervention with any serious health conditions is important (be it medication or therapy), exercise can help. Lancet reported that one study in the US found that “individuals who exercised had 1,49 (43,2%) fewer days of poor mental health in the past month than individuals who did not exercise”. Adding that “the largest associations were seen for popular team sports (22,3% lower), cycling (21,6% lower)”.

Therefore, it’s safe to say that cycling really can be a brilliant way to ease mental health issues and improve the wellbeing of women who seem to disproportionately suffer from certain mental health issues more.

cycling to work is associated with a 45% lower risk of developing cancer

6. Cycling can help to reduce risk of cancer

In 2020, the World Cancer Research Fund International reported that breast cancer was the most common cancer in women globally. Contributing to a whopping 25.8% of the total number of new cancer cases diagnosed that year.

With breast cancer being the most common form back in 2020, it’s important that we do what we can to help prevent cancer from occurring. Of course, genetics plays a large role, but so does lifestyle.

Research carried out by the University of Glasgow back in 2017 found that cycling to work is associated with a 45% lower risk of developing cancer, helping conclude that cycling really could help you from developing cancer.

riding with friends and women only groups in your local area is a brilliant way to make new friends and enjoy some social time

7. Cycling can improve your social life

Life is pretty full-on for women. The research highlighted by the Independent states women have less free time, meaning it can be challenging to fit in socializing.

However, cycling benefits for ladies can include an improved social life. Kill two birds with one stone and ride with other women. Making cycling a fantastic social outlet.

Riding with friends and women only groups as well as clubs in your local area is a brilliant way to make new friends and enjoy some social time. Not to mention, cafe stops on bike rides are also a great way to interact with cycling friends and help you to get out and about.

regular cycling builds stamina for labour and delivery, speeds up post-natal recovery and helps increase energy levels

8. Cycling can be great during pregnancy

Cycling is a brilliant way to keep fit; this is also true for many women during pregnancy. The charity Sustrans has covered this topic, stating that cycling has been shown to help build stamina for labor and delivery, speed up post-natal recovery, and help increase your energy levels.

The same piece goes on to state: “Some women experience pelvic pain when walking during pregnancy. But cycling can help ease that pain and be a much more comfortable way to get around your local area.”

Not just during pregnancy but post-pregnancy, cycling can help with NHS Scotland, suggesting that regular exercise can be a good form of self-help for postnatal depression symptoms.

cycling for women reduce the chances of developing heart disease

9. Cycling lowers risk of heart disease

Among the various other wonderful benefits of cycling for women, lowering the chances of developing heart disease is also one of them.

Research carried out in the UK and published by The BMJ discovered “Commuting by cycling was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality and adverse CVD”. CVD is cardio vascular disease.

Yet again proving, that commuting to and from work could literally save your life. Therefore it’s time to swap the four wheels for two.

people cycling for 30-minute or more per day had a 40% lower risk of developing diabetes

10. Cycling lowers risk of diabetes

Along with reducing the risk of cancer and heart disease, cycling can also help to prevent the risk of diabetes developing.

Research carried out in Finland found that people cycling for 30 minutes or more per day had a 40% lower risk of developing diabetes. This means riding to work or the shops daily can help prevent diabetes.

Therefore, although more men are diagnosed with type 2 and type 1 diabetes than women, it’s still an illness that affects women, but cycling can lower the chances of suffering from it.

Effects of Cycling on Female Body

All in all, cycling has some seriously positive effects on the female body.

Not only does cycling help prevent female cancers or the likelihood of developing other physical conditions, but it also helps to reduce the symptoms associated with mental health issues.

Therefore, although choosing cycling as your form of daily exercise won’t necessarily guarantee prevention or a quick solution to illness, it can help. It can help improve your fitness, your body weight, and thus body image.

But most importantly, it can help you to feel good about yourself. Without our mental well-being, regardless of our physical state, life would be a lot tougher to get through.

Cycling Side Effects for Females

The side effects expected for women can include being much happier. As the science suggests, exercising can increase endorphins and other feel-good chemicals in the brain and reduce stress levels. Therefore, cycling regularly will make you happy 24/7. Goodbye sadness, hello happy times!

Not only that but animals and the environment will automatically love you. For opting for the green option of riding your bike over car or vehicle usage, you will find fury critters become much more fond of you in the Snow White type of way. You will become one with nature, no doubt.

However, your bank balance may dislike your new passion… But sometimes you have to invest a little in your health, be it a new bike or new cycling clothing like a comfy pair of leggings. Either way, it’s worth it.

On a serious note, cycling can be a transformative way of life for women. It is a great sport and mode of transport, and the numerous health benefits for women prove it’s a great activity. If you ask me, you get to sit down while enjoying two wheels, the icing on the cake.

21-speed bike explained

Understanding the mechanics of a bicycle can sometimes seem a little daunting and finding clear cut information that is both easy to follow and understand can also be difficult at times.

But it really shouldn’t have to be. That’s why we have made this easy to understand run down of 21-speed bike gears and everything you need to know about them, from what makes a bike 21-speed, how to tell the difference and how to use one.

What is a 21-Speed Bike?

First and foremost, understanding what a 21-speed bike is will be the first step in this journey. Thankfully, this definition is straight forward and easy to comprehend.

A bike which has 21-speeds is one that has three chain rings (the round component that the chain runs along) at the front, with 7 gears at the back on the casette (spikey round component at the back which the chain runs along that consists of 7 different size cogs).

Therefore, because 3 x 7 + 21, you have 21 gears. Or alternatively, 21 speeds.

Bikes with 21-speeds are most commonly hybrids or off-road style bikes as they need the range of gearing for their intended usage to navigate up steep inclines and ensure comfort.

21 speed bike has 3 front chain rings and 7 rear cassette gears

21-Speed Bike Gears Explained

Now we’ve defined what makes a bicycle have 21-speeds and how to calculate if one does, it’s time to focus on their usage.

Although having 21-speeds may seem overwhelming, it really doesn’t have to be. See it this way: you have more options. This allows you to find the perfect gear to ensure your comfort while riding, regardless of where your bike takes you.

But how do you use this vast amount of gears? With ease: that’s how.

what gears to use explained

What Gears to Use on a 21-Speed Bike?

Knowing which gear to use when riding on a 21-speed bike doesn’t have to be a scary prospect, although we appreciate it may feel that way at first. But once you get the hang of it, it’ll become second nature.

When selecting the front chain ring at the front it’s important to consider the terrain you are riding along. If it’s flat, the biggest (outside) chainring will likely be best, whereas the middle chain ring will be most suited to gradual inclines and the smallest chainring for steep inclines.

The cogs at the back will determine how ‘easy’ it’ll feel to pedal. If you want to be able to ride faster then going down the cassette to a smaller cog is best whereas to spin more for hills etc, then going up the cassette to a larger cog will be favourable.

How to Ride a 21-Speed Bike

Now the gear selection is more clear, it’s time to explain how to ride a 21-speed bike.

Given most 21-speed bikes will either be, a mountain bike, touring bike or off-road hybrid, you’ll likely find yourself scaling some challenging terrain with your 21-speed bike.

Therefore it’s important to remember to change into the gear you want before you get to an obstacle to keep you momentum and to ensure you stay on top of the gear (can push the pedals with ease).

For example: if you are coming up to a steep climb on your mountain bike, drop into a smaller ring at the front and a higher cog at the back. This way you’ll be prepared and will be able to climb the hill without killing your speed.

Another example of when changing gear is vital is when coming up to junctions. If you are in the big ring and the smallest cog at the back, it’ll be much harder to get going from standstill. Therefore, drop into the middle chainring and the mid way point of the cassette. This will make starting again much easier.

18 vs 21 vs 27 bike gears
18-gear vs 21-gear vs 27-gear bikes

18-Gear vs 21-Gear vs 27-Gear Bikes

Now we’ve explained what a 21-speed bike is, what gears to use and how to ride one, comparing it to other options to understand how many gears you need is the last step.

With regards to 18-gear bikes, they can come in two forms. Either having a double chainring at the front, paired with a cassette consisting of 9 cogs. Or instead, three chainrings at the front with 6 cogs on the cassette at the back.

However, a 27-gear bike is one that has a triple chainring at the front, much like the 21-gear, but instead of only having 7 cogs on the cassette at the back, the 27-gear has 9.

But, an 18 gear bike with a double chainring at the front and 9 cogs at the back is lighter than the other three options and is better suited to road bikes or urban hybrids. But the 21-gear and 27-gear are great for ensuring range for bikes needing to get over varied terrain such as off-road.

Therefore, only you will know which is best suited to your needs. But be aware that some bikes won’t be available as standard with different gearing options. Although changes can be made to suit individual needs with regards to gearing.

Hand holding a small bicycle with text, "A Handy Guide to 7-speed Bike Gears".

Many hybrid or commuter style bikes come fitted with 7-speed gears; they’ve been commonplace on such bikes for a rather long time now.

But, what exactly are they?

In this guide, we’ll explain 7-speed bike gears to you in the simplest way possible, so that you can ride your 7-speed like a pro.

What is a 7-Speed Bike?

To put it bluntly, a 7-speed bike is one that is equipped with 7 different gears.

This can be figured out by looking at the back of the bike in question; if there is a single chainring on the front of the bike and the cassette (spiky round metal object on the rear wheel) is made up of 7 different sized cogs at the back, then it’s a 7-speed bike.

Most often, 7-speed bikes tend to be hybrid and commuter style bikes because in the grand scheme of things, 7 gears is not many: but more often than not offers enough range for commuting in urban areas.

seven-speed bicycle gear
A 7-speed bike is one that is equipped with 7 different gears.

7-Speed Bike Gears Explained

Now that we have covered what makes a bike 7-speed, it’s important to grasp how to use the gears and when to know to change either up or down on the cassette at the back.

But rest assured: we will cover that without making it sound too overwhelming and in some simplistic terms without scary jargon.

What Gears to Use on a 7-Speed Bike?

When riding a bike that has 7-speeds, it is important to know what gears to use at what point in order to get the most out of your riding experience and improve upon pedaling efficiency.

Therefore a good rule of thumb, as you don’t have to worry about the front chainring giving there’s only one, is to remember to keep on top of the gear that you are in.

This means whenever the gear feels too hard to push, change the gear to go up the cassette to give you an easier gear to push. This is particularly important to remember when going up hill.

On the other hand, the opposite can be said for riding along the flat or downhill. If you find you are spinning too much then changing gear so the chain goes down the cassette will give you a harder gear to push.

This will then allow you to in theory ride faster; feeling smoother with every pedal stroke.

How to Ride a 7-Speed Bike

Now you know what gears to use, or be in at what point, it’s now time to discuss how to ride a 7-speed bike.

First off, because these bikes are limited to a lesser number of gears, it’s important to make the most out of each gear that you have. This means being aware of terrain that may be a little too demanding on the gears.

For example, when riding up really steep hills, it may be better to opt for a more gradual route instead, and off-road riding may be a little too demanding with such a restricted range of gears. However, you won’t know until you’ve tried to it is of course down to the individual.

With a 7-speed bike it will be a pretty perfect option for riding along bike paths and within urban areas as the lack of gears are often not an issue in such places: especially given a lot of people opt for single speed (fixed geared) bikes to commute or ride around cities on.

Therefore, ride where you feel comfortable: that’s how you should ride a 7-speed bike!

7-Gear vs 21-Gear Cycle

There is no getting around the simple fact that 21 gears on a bike is far more than 7. In fact there is exactly 14 more. But more is not always needed nor is it better.

When it comes to commuting and riding for leisure, especially in pretty flat areas, 7 gears is more than enough. The chain set as well as componentry (parts used to create the gears) is more basic and therefore easier to use, maintain, and cheaper to replace.

Whereas a bike with 21 gears is going to be a lot more of a faff in terms of maintenance and the cost of repairs and replacements. But it will be more suited to hillier terrains. Therefore 21 gears is more commonly seen on mountain bikes where the range of gears is needed for the range of terrain covered.

Therefore, neither one if better than the other, just more suited to different types of cycling which will vary on the needs of the individual rider.

Difference Between 7-Gear and 21-Gear Bicycle

As previously mentioned, there is a difference in 7-gear and 21-gear bicycles in terms of the needs that they fulfil.

However, mechanically, a 7-gear bike will have a single ring at the front with a cassette made up of 7 cogs at the back. Whereas a 21-gear bike will have not only one but three chainrings on the front with 7 cogs on the back of the cassette.

Therefore the similarities are, that they both run a 7-speed cassette but the biggest difference lies with the number of chainrings on the front, going from one to three.

Single chainring next to three chainrings
A 7-gear bike will have a single ring at the front. A 21-gear bike will have not only one but three chainrings on the front.
