And while many budding hopefuls have been brutally shot down by the likes of Deborah Meaden and Peter Jones in years gone by, Taylor more than held his own in his search for a £50,000 investment in return for a 15 per cent share in Rehook.

His impressive pitch sparked a fiery bidding war among all five Dragons, eventually accepting Meaden’s offer of £50,000 for a 25 per cent stake in his business.

Since helping Rehook become even more of a roaring success, Taylor has launched the Rehook PLUS, another light multi-tool weighing about 60 grams and costing £26.99, just more than double the original product. With 11 functions in one and an extremely simple setup, Rehook has gone from strength to strength since its big breakout.

We caught up with Taylor to see how business has boomed for Rehook after Dragons’ Den, as well as his cycling background, how he first conceived the idea, future plans, and much more.

DC: Firstly, could you just tell us a bit about your background with bikes?

WT: “I suppose I’m a practical cyclist – I’ve always used a bike to get around, but don’t often get out for leisure. I’m a sucker for optimisation, so cycling is a great way to fit in some exercise while doing necessary travelling. 

I’ve been on a few cycling holidays around the UK, but for me it’s always about the location rather than the ride. I’d much rather take in the scenery than have my head down trying to cover more miles.”

DC: Could you tell us a bit how you took Rehook from an idea in your head to a “real” product?

WT: “I had the idea after dropping a chain on the way to a meeting. I work in tech and mobile apps had been taking over for a few years, so I constantly had the mindset of coming up with new app ideas – before discovering someone else had beaten me to it.

“I realised that Rehook would be the ideal fit for me as I wanted to be able to focus on learning finance, sales and marketing, but software products require endless new features and maintenance, so you can’t ever stop developing them.

“I knew with a physical product, I would be able to set it up in my free time and progress it intermittently, without it quickly getting outdated in the way software does. I started putting some ideas together and testing random tools and pieces of metal in my garden to get an idea of what was needed and how it would work.”

DC: Your Dragon’s Den pitch was one of the most successful I’ve ever seen. What was it like being on the show?

WT: “Thanks, I was really pleased with how it went.

“To be completely open with you, all the way through the application process for the show I was really wary that I was going to be the joke pitch of the episode. I’ve done a bit of public speaking but have never needed to memorise a speech, so the pitch was definitely the hardest part for me.

“I’m confident with numbers and was well-prepared for any questions, so once the initial pitch was over, it was much easier (though not any less tense).

“The Dragons were surprisingly nice in the Den; you’re grilled by them for more than an hour, so it’s pretty intense and towards the end your brain is fried, so it’s easy to see why so many people seem to not be able to answer what sometimes seems like simple questions.”

DC: What’s your experience been like since the show (both reaction and also dealing with Deborah, etc.)?

WT: “We’ve had a great reaction since being in the Den. There has been lots of support and kind words from people who have seen us on the show. 

“Deborah is very down to earth and genuine. She is obviously very knowledgeable and sharp. We send her an update on progress every month and she always seems able to pick up small details and give really useful feedback, which is amazing when she has been working with so many other businesses for the weeks in-between.”

DC: Could we talk a bit about finances (e.g. Rehook net worth / Rehook business worth / Rehook revenue / Rehook sales)?

WT: “It’s mad; lots of people think you are an overnight millionaire if you are on Dragons’ Den.

“Before the Den we had £150,000 revenue since starting. The business was growing steadily at 40 – 50 per cent revenue per year. This was roughly £30,000 to April 2017, £50,000 to April 2018, £80,000 to April 2019 and £125,000 to April 2020 (the Dragons’ Den investment came in about July/August 2019).

“So, there’s been a 56 per cent increase on last year, but we became VAT-registered, so it was more like a 85 per cent increase (£125,000 + VAT = roughly £150,000).

“We have had a lot of challenges trying to operate and launch a new product during COVID-19. We also had plans to be at a lot of cycling events this year, which have now been cancelled.

“At the same time, we have seen a big increase in demand as more people turn to cycling as a safer method of transport during the pandemic. We have seen about ten times more demand so far compared to last year.

“It’s still just my wife, Anna, and I that run everything from home. We are looking forward to finding an office and growing the team later this year.”

DC: Finally, could you tell us about your future plans, Rehook PLUS and beyond?

WT: “We regularly attend cycle shows so that we can meet customers face to face, which has been essential to get honest feedback. It has been great to take all of this feedback and build it into Rehook PLUS.

“We’ve had a lot of interest from overseas distributors, so we have been really busy working on this too. We have more products in the pipeline and are really looking forward to expanding our range.”

Not so long ago, I took a look at Rehook, a new bike tool (that was even successfully backed on Dragon’s Den) that simply helps you “rehook” your bike chain back on when it comes off, without the greasy finger mess.

And now, Wayne Taylor, the Rehook inventor, is back with a new lightweight multi-tool based that still incorporates the original Rehook concept. Fittingly, it’s called the Rehook PLUS.

What Tools Does Rehook PLUS Have?

Despite weighing in at just 60 grams (about the same as a regular Mars bar), Wayne has managed to squeeze in an impressive 11 bike tools onto the Rehook PLUS.

Indeed, the Rehook Plus contains:

• Rehook chain tool head
• 2x Tyre levers
• 2x Spoke keys
• 8mm, 9mm and 10mm wrench
• 5mm and 6mm Hex / Allen keys

As well as being remarkably light, the Rehook PLUS is also small and slim, with dimensions of 14.8cm x 2.8 cm x 1.4cm (which is slightly longer, but thinner and narrower, than a Mars bar).

It also features an elastic strap so that you can easily attach it to a bike frame. Although I wouldn’t leave it attached to your bike when you park in public as this could be as easy target for sticky fingers.

Other bike chain tools can “break” the chain in order to resize or repair it. These are usually used to shorten a chain after you have used a bike chain removal tool. I hate carrying extra stuff with me when I ride.

My normal ride consists of about a 4km journey into the town where I then go into my co-working space.

If I get a puncture, whatever. There’s a bike shop I can pop into and get it sorted.

However, one slightly annoying occurrence is that my bike chain comes off more frequently than it should. It tends to happen at the bike rack.

Sometimes this is because I waggle the bike a bit too vigorously as I’m moving the wheel out of the slow, and sometimes it’s because those darn pesky kids/drunkards decide to knock my bike over when I have naively left my bike there overnight – ironically because I may have had a few beers myself (I’m pretty sure I’m not aforementioned hoodlum, though… I hope).

Fortunately, putting a bike chain back on isn’t that hard.

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to do without redecorating your hands.

There are plenty of places you can keep your bike pump while riding. Many of them will be small enough to be stored safely away in your pocket, but will also come with a mount that can be attached to your bike frame.

Compact Bike Pump: Pros and Cons

A bigger, or more ‘normal-sized’ bike pump, will often come with a lengthy, flexible hose, a pressure gauge and a large chamber for transferring more air.

To use one to pump up a bike tyre, unscrew or remove the bike’s dust cap to access the valve, before attaching the head of your pump to the valve and inflating to a level of pressure in between the tyre’s minimum and maximum levels (should be found on the tyre’s sidewall),

How to use a mini bike pump?

In exactly the same way. The only difference is it might take longer with a mini bike pump with a pressure gauge given that they’re, well, mini.

What PSI should my bike tyres be?

It really depends on the bike, mini pump or not. 

Narrow tyres need more air pressure than wider ones. As a general rule, road tires usually need to be between 80 and 130 PSI; mountain tires 25 to 35 PSI, and hybrid tires 40 to 70 PSI.
