This battery powered light is slightly heavier than the other offerings on this list (at 500 grams) but that also gives it a more “premium” feel than other similarly priced alternatives. The beam is spread rather than focussed, so it’s particularly useful for urban cycling. You can also set the light to “blink” mode for additional visibility and to save some power.

There are many ways in which you can decipher someone’s age without asking them. Any trip down memory lane that comes with a musical reference. Or how it was to watch a football match.

Perhaps one of the most telling is the hazy memories of playing out in the street. How far you could go without your parents knowing or minding where you’d gone. And the freedom that came with that.

I borrowed my dad’s fixed wheel bike for one such adventure as mine had recently been stolen. He used it for work. It wasn’t glamorous, a heavy steel machine that was sprayed black and had heavy wheels. I struggled to reach those bear-trap pedals that made me grateful for the fixed wheel rotation so that they could not slam into my shins.

As well as the novelty of going up and down like being on a carousel whilst pedalling, I remember the dynamo that I popped on when the skies started to darken and the world around me turned a very special orange, like a stained-glass window made by Quality Street.

If you remember those tombstone Ever-Ready front and back lights that each required two D batteries then you’ll appreciate the simplicity and sleek design of a dynamo.

In a sustainable world, one less purchase of a consumer product like a battery is no bad thing too. Let’s have a look at how we create electricity and light up our world on the roads and lanes.

What is a Bicycle Dynamo?

It is a method by which propulsion of the wheel generates an electrical current. This is transferred to provide energy. The traditional dynamo is referred to as a sidewall or bottle dynamo. Modern versions are powered from the wheel hub. You can also get a bottom bracket dynamo.

How Does a Bicycle Dynamo Produce Electricity?

The motion of the bicycle wheel in the most common forms of dynamo turns a magnet inside a coil of wire. This creates a flow of energy between the two ends of the coil. The energy difference between these ends is expressed as volts. The ‘work’ done causes an electrical current to flow.

Is a Bicycle Dynamo AC or DC?

Dynamo comes from the Greek word dynamis (power). Chances are that your dynamo is actually a magneto. A standard dynamo creates a direct current (DC) – a one-directional flow of electrical charge. A bicycle dynamo creates an alternating current (AC), which reverses direction occasionally.  

Who Invented the Bicycle Dynamo? 

A German, Robert Bosch, founder of the eponymous company, introduced a front light in 1923 which was powered from a dynamo generating electricity from a small roller placed just behind the forks on the front wheel. The higher the speed, the more electricity was generated and the brighter the light.

How Much Electricity Does a Bicycle Dynamo Produce?

The typical electrical output produced from a bicycle dynamo is six volts. It is a low-power outcome derived from your pedalling. Hub dynamos can sometimes be regulated to produce 12 volts. The electricity is generated immediately and ceases to be produced when you stop pedalling.

Lights can run on AC power and that has been the traditional use for dynamos. As we have moved into a world of communication and become more efficient, there have been sufficient advancements in battery technology, LED light technology and charging technology.

Along with the USB cable, this has given rise to the opportunity for the AC current to be converted to a DC current, which is required to power electronics. This means that modern dynamos (which usually run from the front wheel hub) are able to provide power to LED lights, or a battery pack or GPS device or phone. 

The sustainability and delight, nay achievement, that comes from powering your own electronic existence is a powerful force in its own right.

Are Bike Dynamos Good?

Your lights will always function. Most bicycle lights rely on batteries and whilst they can now be charged at home or the office via a USB, this relies on you remembering cables and collecting them when needed. You’ll never get stuck in the dark with a dynamo nor have to push your bicycle home.

If you are a bike-packer or cyclo-tourist, you will enjoy the electricity generated by the hub dynamo in particular and not be perturbed by the increase in energy required by you to power it.

The power which you generate should be sufficient to charge most of the devices you take with you on such a trip. Apart from your laptop. 

Whilst a bottle dynamo powered from the front wheel relies on a physical connection to the tyre, or sometimes, the rim, to produce electricity, it may not be the most reliable and certainly would be of reduced benefit if you went off-road or somewhere that created a sufficiently bumpy ride to cause the connection to fail intermittently. Hub dynamos on the other hand offer a more stable, consistent production of power.

Dynamos have the side effect of producing some form of resistance to power them. In most cases, this is not too noticeable. A bottle dynamo will create a small amount of noise and rub. You might lose one minute off your personal best over a twenty kilometre ride. Overall, the maintenance and upkeep of a dynamo is not significant.

Cycling is great for our health. It’s also heaps of fun, and nothing quite beats that feeling of freedom that comes with cruising along a stunning scenic trail on your day off.

For many people, cycling is also a necessity. Bikes can be the vehicles that get us from A to B, whether that’s through bustling cities or idyllic rural villages. The riding experience is as enjoyable as it is necessary. 

Like most things, though, cycling doesn’t come without its risks. Whether you’re cycling to work or school or simply enjoying a freedom ride in your free time, we all know the hazards of other motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, and wildlife. You need to see and be seen consistently. 

To do this, you’ll need to know exactly how bright your bike lights should be. There’s no definitive answer to this question, but by understanding lumens and light settings, you can arm yourself with the knowledge needed to navigate those roads or trails safely.

What is a Good Brightness for a Bike Light? 

Cyclists travelling through well-lit areas should aim for a 100- or 200- lumen light. If you’re cycling through unlit areas and need to increase visibility, you’ll need a higher lumen count. Anywhere between 200 to 600 lumens is ideal, especially for commuters. 

To be more precise, your front lights will need to be double the lumens of your rear light. Rear lights are generally not as bright as front lights. Most measure between 100 and 180 lumens. 

Your cycling conditions are the biggest factor to consider before purchasing a bike light. Remember: well-lit areas will automatically increase your visibility, so you can safely install lights with a lower lumen count. 

In rural, unlit areas, you’ll need to make yourself stand out like a sore thumb. With fewer light sources and more blind bends, the higher the lumen count, the safer you’ll be. 

Can Bike Lights Be Too Bright? 

Yes! If lights aren’t used properly or positioned at the correct angle, they can blind other pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. 

A headlight pointed directly upwards will go straight into the line-of-sight of pedestrians. To avoid this, you’ll need to angle your beam correctly. 

Start by choosing whether you want your light on the right or left side of your handlebars. Ideally, your beam should illuminate areas up to 10-20 meters in front of you. Your beam should always be pointed towards the ground and angled to hit the curb. 

If you’re riding at higher speeds, your light should be angled higher. If you’re riding slower, your light should be angled lower so you can see pedestrians and other motorists clearly. 

How Many Lumens Should a Bike Light Be? 

There is no one-size-fits-all when it comes to lumens. The ideal count will depend on whether you’re night riding, day riding, travelling through urban areas, or cruising on unlit roads. 

Bike lights can also be split into two categories – lights to improve your vision and lights to make you more noticeable. Choosing lights with a higher lumen count can help you fit into both categories without the need to buy separate lights for each purpose. 

The right lumen count will also depend on the conditions you’re cycling in. Let’s take a closer look at the ideal lumen count for the most typical cycling environments. 

Lit Urban Areas

Well-lit city streets are teeming with light sources. From street lamps to storefront lights and car headlights, your visibility is automatically improved. If you’re cycling in the daytime, you’ll need 100+ lumens.

For night riding, you’ll need anywhere between 50 to 200 lumens. This will depend on how lit up your urban area is. More external light sources will usually require a smaller lumen count.

Unlit Roads 

To cycle safely on unlit roads (especially rural ones) you’ll need between 400 to 600 lumens for maximum visibility. Without external lighting, your vision will be impaired significantly, and you’ll be less visible to drivers. A higher lumen count will keep you, other motorists, pedestrians, and wildlife as safe as possible. 

You should also consider flashing vs. solid lights. Ophthalmologists have confirmed that flashing lights are more likely to grab our attention than solid lights. Many clip-on bike lights come with rapid flashing options that send a consistent signal to motorists that you’re on the road, so you’ll never have to worry about not being seen. This is crucial when you’re travelling on unlit roads.

Front Lights vs Rear Lights 

As rear bike lights are made to make you visible to other road users rather than light your route, they aren’t typically as bright as front lights. Most rear bikes go up to 100 lumens, so the closer you can get to this number, the better. 

Your front lights will automatically be far brighter, and you should use our above guide on lit and unlit roads to inform your choice.

How Bright Should a Bike Light Be?

Remember: bike lights aren’t just for night riding. Though they’re not legally required for day riding, they can help you improve your visibility and make you more noticeable to motorists.

For your own safety, you need to be visible at all times. The last thing any cyclist needs is for their lights to die out mid ride. Discerning cyclists are known for their judgement. They dress stylishly on the bicycle. They do their bit for the environment by commuting. If the wind and traffic are with them they might save some time and money. Although this might not be their highest priority.

This breed appreciates the benefits cycling offers their mental and physical health. In the hope and expectation of prolonging their lives as far as nature allows, they will no doubt seek to use light to illuminate their rides at night. It will help them to see and there are obviously advantages for the discerning cyclist in being seen.

Is it Compulsory to Have Lights on a Bike?

By law, working lights are required on bicycles using public roads in the United Kingdom between the time the sun sets in the evening and rises the next day. In the USA the law operates on a sliding scale but the majority of states require working lights over the same period of time.

If it were compulsory we would expect lights to be fixed to new bicycles as standard and subject to the same regulations and codes as motorised vehicles. In the UK there are a few similarities in the requirements for each mode of transport.

It is not compulsory therefore to have lights on the bicycle outside of those dark hours. There are a few reasons to consider the good habits of using lights even when it isn’t compulsory. We’ll look at how, when and why you should consider making yourself more visible. There are accessories and clothing which can help with this.

What Does the Law Say?

If only everything were black and white. Or red and white as most owners of bicycle lights might like to think. As well as lights, the law in the UK references riding with reflectors as being compulsory at night. The law in the UK is identified in the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 (RVLR).

Whilst not quite consigning reflectors to the garage floor with the same haste as many of us do as we’re unfurling our latest bicycle, we’ll let the lights capture our attention and focus.

In the USA each state has its own law but these tend to be mirrored across many of them. Some are more punitive than others, however. Most states require that a bicycle carries a bright white headlight when riding in the dark but taillights are not required by law in most states. If you do use one, it must be red to comply with the law.

There are laws requiring the lights to be within a certain range of measurements from the ground and positioning. Did you know that in the UK the front light must be at the centre of the handlebars or slightly off to its right? There are also safety standards regulations to be considered, which manufacturers will usually take care of. 

In the UK, it would be considered seriously bad luck if you were stopped by a police officer between sunset and sunrise with only a working front and rear light attached to your bicycle. Reflectors are supposed to be attached to pedals and facing front and rear. You will be required to have working lights during required hours on cycle lanes. 

Punishment for Not Having Lights on Bike

In the UK, there is a fixed penalty of £50 applied for not having lights on your bicycle. In the USA, fines rise up to a couple of hundred dollars.

We should really pause for thought and consider the dent in your street cred as an adult being stopped and asked to dismount your bicycle by an adult wearing a uniform. Then also think carefully about how difficult it will be for you to be seen by other road users and pedestrians. It’s just not worth the embarrassment and humiliation. You should do the right thing and get some lights.

If you are a party to an accident on a public road whilst in control of a bicycle being ridden without lights you could be challenged in court to partial guilt by dint of contributory negligence. Your conduct at the time of the accident could be considered unreasonable. As a result, any awards made by the court could be recalibrated against you.

When Do Bikes Need Lights?

Lights and reflectors are required on a pedal cycle only between sunset and sunrise. You should only be guided by the sun. As soon as the sun goes behind the horizon, lights are required to be turned on. You will be required to ride with them switched on until the sun rises.

It is not against the law in the UK to have no working lights and reflectors when a bicycle is stationary or being pushed along the left hand edge of a roadside.

Although the quality of light before sunset is not a legal consideration, you would be advised to show consideration for other road users and make yourself visible by at least attaching a working rear light.

Dynamos, whether they be the traditional bottle design which works by friction being applied via one of the wheels or via a hub are still accepted. Most cyclists have moved onto USB rechargeable portable lights. These are very convenient for recharging at work or home so you have a good amount of power whenever required. A couple of hours charge is usually enough for 45 minutes of standard illumination.

Where to Position Bike Lights

Although you are unlikely to be halted along your commute if you have at least a front and rear light, there is a code which applies to the positioning of lights.

The RVLR is clear that the only lights which fall for consideration under the law are to be positioned on the bicycle. Helmet lights and those which attach to clothing and bags are all useful but are not seen as a substitute for the legal requirement.

The front light must emit a white beam and be located centrally or on the right hand side of the bicycle not more than 150 cm / 59 inches from the ground.

The rear lamp must shine red and must follow the same positioning as the front. It must be between 35 cm / 13.8 inches and 150cm / 59 inches from the ground.

How Bright Should Bike Lights Be?

The output of a light is measured in lumens. Our eyes interpret white and red light differently and the suggested number of lumens will measure up differently. A smartphone backlight is about 20 lumens.

In a well lit urban area, 50 Lumens on the front and 100+ Lumens on the rear is a safe recommendation. You should take into account possible detours, recharge times, weekend rides across dimmer landscapes when considering the brightness you want from your lights.

If you commute on unlit roads and country lanes and rely on your front light for guidance and visibility, you should consider going up to 800 Lumens on the front. These are heavier, longer units and may take longer to recharge.

There was a dilemma I used to face each day on the way home from work. Perhaps it’s a reflection of my incredibly fortunate life so far that this choice was probably the worst thing about my day…

One option was to take the road, fast but very busy and the most atrocious road surface you’ve ever seen (or more pertinently felt).

The second was to take an off-road bike route, the Fallowfield Loop. This runs along an old trainline which has a super smooth road surface and allowed me to avoid all motorised traffic. It had just one pitfall: it was entirely devoid of lighting. Cycling along it after sunset felt like riding into the abyss.

More than once, I ended up in what I thought was some sort of foliage after I misjudged where the path ended and where the banking began. Either I had to resurface and pedestrianize the road myself or find some way of lighting the off-road route.

Bright Bike Light for Riding in Complete Darkness

Australian brand Knog sent us their PWR Road front light to see if it would solve this problem. It costs around £84.99 and is the flagship front light in their PWR range (note: “PWR” is just short for “Power”, not a fancy anagram like I thought).

It’s USP is that it is ‘a modular bike light’. What this means is that the PWR road is made up of a big battery pack and then has a ‘lighthead’ which attaches to it – that’s right, it’s a portable power bank and a bicycle light in one device.

There are a variety of settings ranging from mimicry of a collapsed star to the equivalent of strapping a strobe light to your bars. All these settings are cycled through by twisting the lighthead: much better than having to faff about with tiny fiddly buttons.

This lighthead throws out a maximum of 700 lumens which as you can see from the videos is really quite bright for something as sleek as this. The rate-limiting step therefore will not be max lumens as this was amply sufficient to light any portion of road, Fallowfield loop or otherwise. This setting only lasted for roughly 90 minutes so had to be used sparingly. The lowest ‘Stamina’ lasted a mammoth 20 hours however put out a measly 10% of the maximum output. For most of my testing miles I used the solid setting in between these two which was bright enough for the overwhelming majority of my riding.

Given that I have zero desire to induce seizures in my fellow road users I hardly utilised the flashing modes. However if (for some compelling reason) I wished to exercise this ability, there were 3 different flashing modes from intense strobe to eco-flash which claims to have a gargantuan 165 hour life.

I can’t think of any other types of mode you would want for this light but if you can, Knog’s Modemaker allows you to further customise your lighthead’s flashing and brightness behaviour.

The designers and engineers behind the PWR range (all 12 of them) have made the beam slightly elliptical and added clear sections on the side of the lighthead which increases your side visibility to other traffic and makes an appreciable difference to lighting up the whole path ahead, not just a thin beam.

Power Bank Bike Light(!)

Upon removal of the lighthead, one is confronted with a couple of USB ports in the battery section. This is because this pack not only powers the light but will also handily charge your mobile devices.

The PWR light has a 3350mAh battery, which can power up to 180 hours of light in eco flashing mode or charge up a smart phone to about 50%.

A personal bugbear of mine against bike lights is their total lack of indication as to when they will suddenly decide to run out of battery. Thankfully the PWR road has very clear indicators of how much battery it has both during charge and discharge. Unfortunately, the mechanism to remove the light head is reasonably fiddly and I did end up slightly removing the battery from the metal sheath it sits inside.

The mounting mechanism works on bars with diameter 22.2-38.1mm so will fit nigh on every bike in the realm of creation. It can be fastened either above or below the handlebars and could even be rigged to fit a helmet. Throughout the testing the mount kept the light secure.

Knog PWR Road Light Review [In-Summary]

All in all, Knog have made an excellent bike light that also doubles up as a power bank for your mobile devices when you’re on the go. Obviously, this means that this light is more expensive than others out there, but you are effectively getting two useful products in one small package.

The Knog PWR Road Light 700L performs very well as both a bike light and a power bank and would make a great addition to any discerning setup. No more riding into foliage for me.

How bright should bike lights be?

Play to the conditions. Going too bright in certain environments is unnecessary and will not only waste your LED’s battery, but could potentially dazzle other drivers or passers-by.
