Man on ebike

Are you thinking of buying an e-bike? This should help you make up your mind.

It’s now incredibly common to see electric bikes cruising down city streets, with many urban riders now using e-bikes as their primary mode of transport.

And it’s easy to see why. They take a lot of the effort out of cycling – ideal for commuters who don’t want to arrive at work tired and sweaty – are cheaper to run than cars, and let you feel the wind in your hair while getting from A to B.

If you’ve clicked on this article, you’re probably considering buying an e-bike for yourself. Perhaps you’re already a cyclist who wants a ride that’s easier and less tiring, or maybe you currently drive but want to switch out your car journeys for a bit of exercise.

Either way, we’re here to help. Here, we’ll take a look at the benefits of e-bikes, weighing up the pros and cons of making the switch for both current cyclists and motorists.

Let’s dive in.

e-bikes take the strain out of cycling and give you a boos whenever you need it

Understanding the Appeal of Electric Bikes

There’s plenty to love about electric bikes.

First of all, they help you to go further and faster than on a regular bike thanks to the nifty little motor which takes the strain out of cycling and gives you a boost whenever you need it, whether that’s jetting off from a red light or heaving yourself up a hill.

Statistics show that people who have an e-bike cycle more, so they’re great for getting you in the saddle more often, if that’s your goal.

Plus, they can save you money, they’re great for commuting, and they’re even safer than regular bikes in many ways.

Bicycle vs E-Bike

First of all, let’s take a look at the benefits of switching to an e-bike for current cyclists.

The Upgrade: From Traditional to Electric Bikes

It’s easy to believe that having an electric bike enhances the cycling experience. You can travel further and for longer with less effort thanks to the motor, and you’ll no longer be defeated by strong headwinds or tough climbs.

If you cycle to commute, you’ll certainly notice the difference when you can arrive at work without being drenched in sweat, exhausted and in need of a shower and a sit down before you can start your work day. Leisure riders will also feel the benefit of motor assistance, particularly if you want to tackle more difficult terrains without so much physical strain.

Statistics also show that people with e-bikes are twice as likely as regular riders to get out there and ride – largely to do with all of the benefits we’ve already mentioned – so if you already enjoy cycling but want to get out there a little more, investing in an e-bike could be the perfect choice.

advantages of e-bikes over cars

Cost-Benefit Analysis for Cyclists Buying an E-Bike

Okay, there’s no two ways about it – electric bikes are expensive. You’ll generally be hard pushed to find a decent e-bike for less than £1,000, and you can spend significantly more than that for more premium models.

However, maintaining an e-bike typically costs about the same as maintenance for a regular bike. Most components are generic between regular bikes and e-bikes, and of course keeping it clean, making sure the tyres are inflated, the chain and cables are lubed and the battery is properly charged will help maintain lifespan in the long run.

You should also consider the potential long-term savings. Yes, the initial cost of an e-bike is rather high, but if you use it more to get around to your day-to-day activities, you’ll save money on fuel and public transport.

If you cycle for exercise, you could save money on a gym membership by investing in a bike you actually want to ride.

Plus, there’s no real need to worry about the cost of charging your e-bike: on average, it will cost between £0.20 to £0.40 per charge. Considering many e-bikes can get you as far as 80km on a single charge – often a whole week of commuting – this cost really is quite negligible.

Car vs Electric Bike

If you usually use a car as your primary mode of transport, making the switch to an electric bike could seem all the more daunting. However, there are so many benefits to choosing an e-bike over a car – for your wallet, for your health, and for the environment – that we’re sure you’d never look back.

The Switch: From Cars to E-Bikes

There’s no arguing with the fact that running an e-bike is more environmentally-friendly than running a car. When you consider the fact that one passenger vehicle emits 42g CO2 per kilometre, while an e-bike emits just 7g of CO2 per kilometre, the benefits are abundantly clear.

There are also personal benefits to choosing an e-bike over a car. For one, you’ll naturally get more exercise, which will boost not only physical health but mental health, too. You’ll also be able to avoid traffic by utilising urban bike lanes, enjoy greener and more scenic journeys, and explore more of your town or city than you could on four wheels.

Cost-Benefit Analysis for Car Drivers

As we mentioned earlier, it costs between £0.20 to £0.40 to fully charge an electric bike. If your e-bike can get you as far as 80km on a single charge – which might well be enough to cover all of your commutes for a week – that really isn’t much money at all.

Fuel costs are currently very expensive, and very volatile. It might cost you £50 or even £100 to fill up your car, and while this could get you 200 miles or more, that’s still far, far more expensive than the equivalent e-bike charge.

Now, we’re not going to be unrealistic and work on the basis that you’d switch ALL of your journeys to pedal power if you bought an e-bike, but you’re bound to save money on fuel by switching to cycling for even some of your commutes – and we reckon you’ll feel much better, too.

Long term savings are also significant – e-bikes are cheaper to maintain than cars, they’re cheaper or even free to park, and you don’t need to pay for MOT and road tax.

an empty battery doesn't leave you stranded, e-bike functions as a regular bike

Common Concerns and Misconceptions about Electric Bikes

While e-bikes are getting increasingly popular, their relative newness means there are still a fair few concerns and misconceptions commonly held about them.

A big one is legality, and that’s fair enough, as the laws around e-bikes can be quite confusing.

In the UK, the EU and Australia, the motor on an e-bike cannot prove pedal assistance when you reach 15mph (25kph). You can, of course, ride faster than that, but it needs to be under your own steam.

In the US, the motor can legally keep going up to 20mph (32kph) on Class 2 e-bikes, or 28mph (45km/h) for Class 3.

If you’re over 14 in England, Scotland and Wales, you don’t need tax, insurance or a licence to ride an electric bike on the road – though we’d always recommend making sure you’re appropriately insured against personal accident and third-party damages.

Another common concern is battery life: no-one wants to be caught short with a flat battery. Many e-bikes can do as much as 50 miles (80km) in a single charge, but plenty can do much more than that. Plus, a lot of e-bikes have digital panels on the handlebars which tell you exactly how much battery you have remaining, and some models come with removable batteries you can switch out, or even dual batteries for twice the power.

Of course, even if the worst should happen and you run out of juice, you can still ride your e-bike like a normal bike, so you won’t be left stranded.

One of the most common claims made by cyclists about e-bikes is that they are ‘cheating’. While the motor does take the strain out of cycling in many ways, there are still plenty of health and fitness benefits to riding an e-bike – certainly more than there are to driving a car – and anything that gets people onto a bike saddle is a win in our book.

what to consider before buying an e-bike

Choosing the Right E-Bike

When you’ve made the decision to buy an electric bike, next comes the fun part: bike shopping.

With so many different e-bikes on the market, it can be tricky to decide which one is right for you.

Budget will, of course, play a huge role in the decision-making process, but as with any investment, it’s generally not a good idea to skimp out on a cheaper model that might need replacing in a few years. Instead, shop around for an e-bike that’s going to offer the most long-term value, including quality components, good battery range, and durability, rather than going for the cheapest option in the short term.

It’s also important to consider your lifestyle and what you’re going to use the bike for. Will you be commuting in a city, and therefore need a nifty urban road bike? Will you be going off-road, and need a sturdier ride or even a fat bike? Do you need to be mindful of storage and consider investing in a folding e-bike? Or do you want a bike that you can ride to work on during the week, and then use to explore the countryside on weekends?

There’s an e-bike for all of these types of rider and more, so it’s worth sitting down and thinking about what you’ll use the bike for before you part with your cash.

Factors like design, style, and functionality will also play a role – no one wants to ride an ugly bike – so don’t be ashamed to take into account the look, feel, colour and design of e-bikes when you’re shopping.

Should I Buy an E-Bike?

Whether or not you should buy an electric bike ultimately comes down to your personal circumstances.

You should consider whether you can afford the initial cost, what you’re realistically going to use an e-bike for, how much it will cost in the long run compared to your current mode of transport, and how having an electric bike will impact your lifestyle.

While electric bikes are an excellent choice for lots of different kinds of rider, there’s no getting away from the fact that they are expensive pieces of kit, and you should always weigh up the pros and cons of the investment based on your own personal circumstances before taking the plunge.

1. Cowboy

Cowboy are known for making quality, smart e-bikes. They’re great to look at, give you a smooth, agile ride, and have a host of smart-tech features. This is another brand where you’re getting a lot of bike for your money.

A highlight with Cowboy is their app – a very useful thing to have on your handlebars. It includes navigation, ride data, location tracking and more. The bike’s smart wireless charging means you can use the app and charge your phone on the go.

E-bikes do more than you might think for your fitness, and the Cowboy app allows you to track your fitness levels and see how your stats compare to the Cowboy online community. You can also sync up with your favourite fitness app.

Cowboy bikes don’t have as long a range as some rivals – an average of 43 miles. However, this should be more than adequate for most city commuters. The removable battery takes 3.5 hours to charge fully. As a side note, until self-charging e-bikes become a reality, removable batteries are a good feature to look for on an e-bike – you can top up at work, and rest assured you’ve got more than enough juice to get you home!

In short, the range is simple, powerful and stylish. It’s also low maintenance, with a single-speed drivetrain and a minimal amount of parts. Hydraulic brakes give you great stopping power, and the lightweight frames and superior handling make for a fun ride.

Veloretti bikes are designed in Amsterdam and handcrafted in Europe. The company’s mission is to o make city transportation easy and enjoyable, with an e-bike to get you there in style. As such, the e-bikes feature a timeless look and simple efficiency.

Though they don’t have the same tech features as some rivals, they’re beautiful to look at. The company sum it up pretty well in their own words: “A Veloretti is just a no-nonsense bicycle with a contemporary design and a good price.”

Veloretti offers two electric models, the Ivy and the Ace. There are options for single drive, three gears, or three gears with double handbrakes on either model.

Everything serves its purpose smoothly and effectively. There’s an efficient mid-drive Bafang motor, and stepless Enviolo automatic shifting on the models with three gears. The smart battery can be removed for security, or swapped with a fresh one rides beyond the estimated 37 – 74 mile range.

16. Specialized Bikes (Electric Range)

Specialized e-bikes aren’t cheap, but with this brand you’re getting an incredibly high-quality bike. The e-bike range consistently attracts rave reviews from the biking community, and with good reason.

There are three ranges – Road, Mountain and Active. Active will be the range suited to the average commuter, and has the option of a-frame (Vado) or step-through (Como) models. There’s also a choice between full-power or super-lightweight models.

The Active range of e-bikes are fast, functional and versatile. They’re perhaps not the most outstanding looks-wise, but are a joy to ride with an 80mm front suspension fork, high-volume tires, a suspension seatpost and an ergonomic riding position.

Specialized’s MasterMind motor control helps you get the most out of your gear changes, and hydraulic brakes give you excellent stopping power.

As you’d expect from a brand as invested in technology and research as Specialized, the range is full of smart features too. The in-built display features Garmin Radar for detecting vehicles, Mission Control ride diagnostics, and wireless software updates.

The lightweight SL options are a pared down version that at first glance look like a standard bike. You don’t get the sale tech package (though you can connect your phone to the Specialized app) but the benefit gained is an extremely lightweight bike with a range of up to 90 miles. There’s an optional range-extender add-on too.

Trek e-bikes range widely in price. However, lower-end and commuter models fall into the medium range. They’re built using high-quality materials like steel, alloy and carbon fibre, meaning Trek Bikes’ e-bikes are durable, and capable of withstanding  tough terrains and harsh weather.

Trek incorporates the powerful Bosch motor, making their e-bikes fast and capable.  This motor is standard on Trek’s Verve, Allant, and District ranges. There are three power levels, the Active Line, Active Line Plus, or Performance line, and these come with one of two interactive displays, or a smartphone hub.

The standard battery has a range of up to 50 miles, and the Powerube 500 add-on extends this to up to 80 miles. Both are removable, and charge fully in 4.5 hours.

Three of the five in this range (The Kathmandu Hybrid SLT, Kathmandu Hybrid Pro, and Touring Hybrid Pro) are available in a choice of a-frame, v-frame or step-through options. The Touring Hybrid is a great commuter e-bike. Built around Bosch’s powerful third-generation motor and PowerTube battery, the centre of gravity is low for safety and easy handling. It’s also easy to find the ideal position to enjoy your ride.

Practicality-wise, the Integrated Carrier provides a solid means of carrying day-to-day possessions along with you. Shimano hydraulic brakes give you great stopping power, and to top it off, it’s a pretty stylish bike to look at too.

The Ella Cruise Hybrid has a sleek, retro-classic design, and is another good choice. There’s not much difference feature-wise between it and the Supreme Hybrid SL to be honest. What is a Folding Fat Tire Electric Bike?

Folding fat tire electric bikes are exactly what they say on the tin: a fat tire bike that runs with an electric motor and can be folded for easy storage and transportation.

The usual tire width on a fat tire bike is between four and five inches, compared to the average width of a mountain bike tire, which is around the two inch mark.

Who Are Folding Fat Tire E-Bikes For?

While adventurous off-road riders are the most obvious target market for folding fat tire e-bikes, they’re also good for commuters, city riders and weekend leisure bikers too.

Fat tires are designed for dealing with rugged terrain including snow, mud and sand, and the electric motor component makes these bikes ideal for tackling tricky inclines and demanding routes.

The fact that they can be folded makes them great for those who like to go further afield for their cycling adventures, as their compact folded size makes them great for taking in a car to find the perfect trail.

That said, as with other folding bikes, these also work well for urban riders who don’t have much room for bike storage at home – particularly those who live in snowy cities, or who like to explore further afield from their urban locale while also needing a bike to get them around day-to-day.

Let’s take a look at some pros and cons to see if a folding fat tire e-bike would be right for you.

The post VanMoof S4 vs S5: 8 Key Differences in the New VanMoof appeared first on Discerning Cyclist.

]]>

The Short Answer

The VanMoof S4 is a budget-friendly version of the premium S5 electric bike. The S5 has more advanced features and a higher price, while the S4 offers similar features at a lower cost. The choice depends on budget and preferences for design and charging time.

Back in 2022, e-bike brand VanMoof released the VanMoof S5, a premium electric bike designed for long rides and comfortable cruising.

It’s packed with the latest tech, complete with Turbo Boost, a smooth, silent motor system, a smart shifter that glides through the gears exactly when you need, and plenty of anti-theft tech – quite necessary, seeing as this bike costs more than a cool £3,000.

It may be surprising, then, to discover that in May 2023, the VanMoof S4 model was announched. While the naming might be a little backwards, this new model certainly is not – it offers the same premium VanMoof experience at a more budget-friendly price point.

Here, we’ll go over the main differences between the VanMoof S4 and S5, comparing the two models head-to-head, so you can see which you might like to buy.

Why is VanMoof S4 So Called?

VanMoof calls its S4 model “beautifully uncomplicated”, which suggests why they’ve called it the S4 instead of, say, the S6.

It’s designed to be a dialled-down version of the S5, with a lower price tag of £2,198 but plenty of the same great features. This is probably why they’ve named it the S4, sitting somewhere between the previous S3 and the top-spec S5.

VanMoof S4 vs S5

In terms of day-to-day use, there actually isn’t a whole lot different about the S4 and the S5. When you get into the details, you can see the premium, brand new tech employed in the S5, but that’s not to say that the S4 isn’t boasting some brilliant features too.

You can compare VanMoof’s strategy to Apple’s approach with the MacBook Pro and Air. The VanMoof S5 is like the premium top-of-the-line MacBook Air, while the VanMoof S4 is like the MacBook Air – a top product with many similar premium features, but missing the very top specs in order to bring down the price and appeal to a broader audience.

Let’s take a closer look.

VanMoof S4

  • UK Flag £2,198
  • US Flag $2,498
  • EU Flag €2,198

Prices are approximate

The new VanMoof S4 is a beautiful-looking bike. Its uncomplicated design comes in four colours – Evergreen, Purple Fog, Sunbeam Yellow and Foam Green – and is intended to help riders “reclaim the pure joy of riding”.

Like the S5, the VanMoof S4 has a Turbo Boost button for whenever you need an extra little push, and its assist will take you up to 20 mph with four power levels.

You’ll get up to 87 miles of range from the battery, which is non-removable but can be charged to 50% in 1 hour 30 mins, or to full in 4 hours 30 mins.

VanMoof says the S4 model is “practically unstealable” thanks to its built-in anti-theft features,  including tamper detection, onboard alarms, GSM location tracking, and remote lockdown mode. There’s also a Kick Lock so you can secure your bike with the tap of a button.

VanMoof S5

  • UK Flag £3,298
  • US Flag $3,998
  • EU Flag €3,498

Prices are approximate

The S5 from VanMoof, is a remastered straight frame bicycle which the company reports has been built specially for for controlled cruising. It’s great for anyone wanting a comfy bicycle for commuting that is both stylish and efficient.

Aesthetically the S5 is very much in keeping with the rest of VanMoofs electric range, minimalist and clean cut. This particular model is only available in a stylish grey, which regardless, definitely stands out against other bikes.

This bike is fitted with a 487 Wh battery. This battery has a charging time of charge in 6 hours and 30 minutes for 0-100% and 2 hours and 30 minutes for 0-50%. The range is also pretty impressive, with up to 93 miles on one full charge.

VanMoof S4 vs S5

As with the S4, the VanMoof S5 is certainly a looker. Available in sleek Gray or Dark Gray shades, it looks identical to the S4 at a glance.

The S5 has an innovative Halo Ring interface, consisting of LED light rings on the handlebars which communicate all the information you need in your eye-line while riding. The left handlebar Halo Ring shows your battery level, while the right one shows the speed you’re riding at and which power assist level you’re on. You can also mount your phone to the handlebars and use the VanMoof app to track your ride as you go.

This bike also has a Kick Lock to secure your bike with the tap of a toe, removing the need for a key, and it’s packed with anti-theft tech too.

The Turbo Boost button gives you an extra kick when you need it, and the E-shifter, torque sensor, and Gen 5 Motor combine to form “an intuitive power system” to give you the “smoothest, most silent riding experience”.

VanMoof boasts about its “ultra-low maintenance parts”, which is also a bonus.

In terms of charge time, the S5 is slightly slower than the S4, with 0-50% charge in 2 hours and 30 minutes and 0-100% charge in 6 hours and 30 minutes. You’ll get 37 miles of range on full power mode and 93 miles on economy power mode, which is nothing to turn your nose up at.

The VanMoof S5 costs £1,200/$1,500 more than the S4 – which is a significant difference.

Which is Better: VanMoof S5 or S4?

It’s difficult to say definitively whether one of these bikes is better than the other – that all depends on your budget and what you’re willing to splash the cash over.

Let’s take a look at the two models side by side.

Which VanMoof Should You Buy?

That all depends on your budget and your priorities – though looking at the two bikes side by side, there isn’t a whole lot to justify the extra £1,000+ price tag on the VanMoof S5 unless you’re really particular about having the top specs. Therefore the VanMoof S4 will make more sense for most people.

The S5 has a very slightly longer range, some more premium components and boasts the very latest technology, but it’s slightly heavier than the S4 and takes longer to charge.

The S4 comes in a range of colours, while the S5 comes in classic shades of grey, so which is better on that front is entirely down to personal preference.

Reviews of the S4 say it is still a delightful ride, and not all that different from the more expensive S5.

So, while riders who place emphasis on having the most premium experience may still opt for the flagship model, the S4 offers almost identical features for less cash, making it an excellent choice nonetheless.

The Short Answer

Himiway bikes are generally regarded as good, offering affordability, power, and a range of options. They receive positive reviews for their battery life, comfort, and stylish design. The brand provides excellent customer service and maintains a helpful online presence.

If you’re in the market for an electric bike, chances are you’ve come across the brand Himiway during your research.

But, with so many e-bike brands and models out there, it can be hard to know which to choose and why.

Buying an electric bike is an investment: they’re certainly not cheap, and if you want it to last a good while you’ll want to make sure it has the best components, including a powerful motor, quality brakes, long-lasting battery and decent suspension.

Nowadays, there are e-bikes available for all kinds of riders and terrain. Fat tyre e-bikes are excellent for rugged rides, while cruisers are perfect for those looking primarily for comfort and style. Electric cargo bikes suit riders who need to carry goods or even children on their bike, while electric mountain bikes elevate the off-road experience.

Himiway offers a wide range of bikes covering all of the above categories – with all of their bikes having fat tyres – so their range is worth a browse no matter what kind of bike you’re looking for.

On this page, we’ll dive into the specifics of the Himiway brand, look at some reviews, and show you some of the most popular bikes designed by Himiway.

Are Himiway Bikes Good?

Online reviews of Himiway bikes are generally very positive, with many praising their affordability which doesn’t sacrifice quality of the overall package, decent battery life/range, and powerful throttle which makes riding Himiway bikes a whole lot of fun.

Himiway boasts a varied electric bike lineup, offering something for everyone.

The UK Himiway e-bike selection consists of:

  • Himiway Cruiser Long Range Fat Tire Electric Bike
  • Cruiser Step-Thru Long Range Step-Thru Electric Bike
  • Himiway Zebra Premium All-Terrain Electric Fat Bike
  • Himiway Big Dog Electric Cargo Bike
  • Himiway Escape Pro Moped-Style Electric Bike
  • Himiway Cobra Softail Electric Mountain Bike

These bikes vary in price from £1,549 for the Himiway Cruiser to £2,399 for the Himiway Cobra, and they all come with a two year warranty, 15 day returns and free shipping.

The downsides that Himiway users report include hard-to-understand written build instructions (though this is mitigated by a brilliant video on Himiway’s website which makes assembly a breeze), and some down-market components which reveal how Himiway has made such affordable e-bikes.

That said, reviewers maintain that they can overlook the individual lower-end components when considering how well Himiway’s bikes come together as a whole: of course, some sacrifices have to be made for a bike to be this affordable, and the combination of excellent battery life, comfort and fun that Himiway bikes provide makes them great value for money and a brilliant choice.

Himiway bikes website

Is Himiway a Good Brand?

Himiway is deemed a good brand because it combines budget-friendliness and power – a winning combination – throwing in excellent customer service and a great community to boot.

Aside from the bikes themselves, which receive praise for their build quality, power, range and stylishness, people also love the Himiway brand because of its great customer service and helpful assistance when required.

After you’ve done your research and bought your brand new e-bike, it’s important to know that you can rely on assistance from the manufacturer if you need it – whether that’s for tips on getting the most out of your bike, advice on components, or simply knowing someone’s there to help if things do go wrong.

Himiway does a great job in this regard, particularly on the US version of the site which has an extensive help centre – broken down into ‘before purchase’ and ‘after purchase’ guides, an e-bike info section, and tools and instructions – FAQs, and the option to call the company by phone or submit a help ticket if you have a specific query.

Himiway’s US website also has a regularly updated blog with tips for getting the most out of your Himiway bike, some cool rider stories, product updates and more, and a page for the Himiway Cycle Club, which is a nice inclusion and offers a way to meet other Himiway riders, explore new routes and terrains, and make new cycling friends.

The UK version of the online e-bike store has less of the above, but there’s no reason why you can’t take a scroll through the American site wherever you are in the world simply by toggling the country in the top right-hand corner of the page.

All of these things combine with quality e-bikes to make Himiway a great brand overall.

Where Are Himiway Bikes Made?

Himiway keeps the location of its factories rather quiet, and there’s no information on the ‘about ‘page of its website, but third-party sites suggest that Himiway’s bikes are made in Asian countries – possibly China – which allows it to keep its prices affordable while offering high-quality bikes.

Himiway Bikes Review

Himiway bikes are, overall, a great choice for those in the market for an e-bike. They are relatively affordable, well-made, durable and versatile, each equipped with fat tyres that help you handle anything your ride throws at you.

Some Himiway bikes are designed for adventuring – such as the Cobra softail e-MTB, the Zebra all-terrain electric fat bike (read our in-depth Himiway Zebra review here) and the Cruiser long range electric bike – but the brand also caters to commuters and cargo-carriers with the Big Dog cargo bike and the Rambler commuter e-bike.

The beauty of the durable design and fat tyres found on Himiway bikes is that they can often be used anywhere and everywhere. Primarily need an e-bike for city commuting, but want to be able to adventure off-road on the weekends? That’s not a problem when you have a powerful 750W motor and fat tyres!

Picture of bike thief with lock cutters escaping on stolen bike.

There is no worse feeling than that twist in your gut when you get back to where you locked your bike for the day to find an empty space and a mangled D-lock. Your bike has been stolen, and you have no idea when, by whom, or where it’s been taken, and you have to begin to confront the fact that you’re unlikely to ever see that bike again.

But what if there was a way to be kept updated on the safety of your bike even when you aren’t with it?

Luckily, there are bike security devices on the market that can be connected to your phone to give you GPS updates, push notifications and even alert calls that keep you in the know about the safety and whereabouts of your bike, no matter where you are.

Bike Alarm That Alerts Your Phone

If you need that extra bit of peace of mind when leaving your bike, investing in a bike alarm that alerts your phone is a brilliant idea.

There are a few of these alarms on the market: some alert you via an app and push notifications, and some even call your phone to let you know if your bike’s been moved.

One such example is AlterLock, an alarm/GPS tracking security system for bikes. If the device detects motion from your bike while it’s set in ‘lock’ mode, it will blare out a loud (95db) alarm, and then track the bike once per minute via GPS. If motion is detected, the Alterlock app will notify your phone with its own notification sound.

Leopard Lync is another smart alarm system which sounds a 109dB theft alarm, gives you instant theft alerts via the Lync app if unauthorised movement is detected, and has GPS tracking so you can keep an eye on your bike’s location. It uses 4G connectivity with global coverage.

There’s also the I LOCK IT GPS, which has real-time location tracking, a 110dB alarm triggered by intelligent motion sensors, an app which notifies you of any movement, and it can even be used to automatically secure your bike during short stops, such as at traffic lights, via the app or hand-held transmitter.

AlterLock: Bicycle Alarm with Phone Notifications

Let’s take a closer look at the AlterLock, which sends you phone notifications when movement is detected while your bike is locked.

AlterLock

Region Upfront Monthly
UK ✅ £95.99 £3.49
Europe ✅ €111.99 €3.99
USA ❌ N/A N/A
Canada ❌ N/A N/A
Australia ❌ N/A N/A

Estimated pricing.

App includes ability to register a photo of your bike together with its specs and serial number.

Attached using anti-theft bolts only sold with this product.

AlterLock uses both GPS and Wi-Fi to determine its location accurately.

If AlterLock detects your bike is being moved, it sounds an alarm, deterring theft and interference.

  • Size: 15.9 mm × 3.8 mm × 0.9 cm
  • Weight: 50g

The AlterLock tracking device works through an app on your smartphone which sends location through GPS and Wifi. Alerts are pop up on your phone when your bicycle is moved and an alarm also sounds to deter thief’s, much like a house alarm.

In the event of the alarm sounding, the app also allows you to deactivate the alarm. Other settings can also be managed such as how long the alarm sounds for and movement detection sensitivity within the app.

In addition to this, the AlterLock app also has a function to upload a photo of your bike as well as specification information, such as your bikes serial number, to help retrieve in the event of a theft.

The tracking unit for the AlterLock fits underneath the bottle cages on your bike and is secured using specialist anti-theft bolts.

Pros

  • Aerodynamic
  • Includes alarm
  • Up to 1.5 months battery life

Cons

  • Expensive to buy
  • No USB cable included
  • Not well hidden

How Does AlterLock Work?

AlterLock fits onto your bike and notifies your phone when the device detects movement while your bike is locked away. It also blares out a 95db alarm – louder than a lawnmower – if your bike is moved while locked.

When motion is detected, the AlterLock app will call your phone with its own notification sound, so you can easily distinguish it from a regular text or phone call and instantly know that something is happening to your bike.

The ‘lock’ mode is toggled by you through the app, and you can also use the app to configure the alarm and set the motion detection sensitivity. Plus, as long as your smartphone is in close proximity, you can turn ‘lock’ mode on and off using a button on the device itself, which sits on or underneath your bike’s bottle cage, so you don’t need to take off your gloves and pull out your phone to get riding.

If your bike is unfortunately stolen – despite the loud alarm and alert – the AlterLock will track it once per minute with GPS so you can monitor its location. If it’s moved to a place where there is no GPS signal, the device then uses WiFi signals to determine its approximate location to help the police search for it.

AlterLock works slightly differently to other tracking devices in that it can track your bike’s location independently of your smartphone’s Bluetooth connection – so even if your bike ends up hundreds of miles away, the device will still transmit location information.

Where Is AlterLock Available?

The best place to buy AlterLock is directly from the AlterLock website, where it costs between £114.99 and £118.99 at the time of writing, depending on whether you choose standard bolts or anti-theft bolts. It’s also available on Amazon and at other retailers.

AlterLock Alternatives

There are a few products on the market that are similar to AlterLock, including the I LOCK IT GPS and Leopard Lync mentioned earlier. These vary in price and functionality, so it’s always worth shopping around for the device that best suits your needs and budget.

Many of these products cost upwards of £100, which might seem like a lot of money to spend. However, we’d urge you to consider the cost of having your bike stolen – it’s likely to be much higher than £100 – and the price of the heartache and stress associated with bike theft and security.

Some bikes even come with this technology built in – for example Urtopia e-bikes. As well as having a movement alarm that alerts you to unauthorised movement, these bikes have a GPS tracker connected to an app, a gyroscope to detect theft, and a fingerprint unlock system.

Is There a Bicycle Alarm That Calls Your Phone?

Yes! There are a few bicycle alarms on the market that call your phone as well as blasting out a  loud alarm when movement is detected. The AlterLock is a great example as it’s neat, unobtrusive and not too expensive, but products like the Leopard Lync and I LOCK IT GPS are similar alternatives.

These types of alarms can detect unauthorised movement and let you know via push notification that your bike is being moved while locked, so you can respond in real time by calling the police.

Many also offer GPS tracking functionalities, so if your bike is sadly stolen, you can track its whereabouts and improve your chances of getting it back.

Installing one of these alarms is a great way to give you some added peace of mind when leaving your bike unattended. It’s an unfortunate truth that bike theft is incredibly common, particularly in urban areas, and having a bike alarm that calls your phone will help you to respond quickly should the worst happen.

Close up of wheels of chunky e-bike.

Cycling is wonderful for a whole range of reasons. It’s a lovely way to travel, a leisurely activity for a sunny weekend, and a great way to get and keep fit, too. However, if you’re overweight, you might feel a bit daunted about starting to cycle. Riding a bike can feel like really hard work at times, and you might even be concerned about finding a bike that will hold your weight.

E-bikes are a great idea for those who are just getting back on the saddle, or who want all the fun and fitness that comes with cycling without all of the effort and sweat – and they are, like plenty of non-electric bikes, often suitable for heavy riders too!

On this page, we’ll answer some common questions about e-bike weight limits, how good they are for weight loss, and what to look for in an e-bike for an overweight person, before trying to help find the best electric bike for heavy adults.

  7. Wallke x3 folding-e-bike white

    Max weight: 158kg / 350lb

    Wallke X3 Folding E-Bike

Folding e-bikes can have a high weight limit too: this is a great example.

Do Electric Bikes Have a Weight Limit?

Yes, there is an electric bike weight limit, and it’s usually in the range of 220-300 pounds, or 100 to 130kg – which varies from bike to bike. That said, some manufacturers do have models for heavier cyclists, and the weight limit can vary depending on the type of bike, too.

Can You Lose Weight on an E-Bike?

Yes, absolutely! While e-bike pedalling is assisted by a motor, you can still burn between 100 and 600 calories an hour depending on the intensity of your ride and how much motor support you opt for. It’s good cardiovascular exercise, and great for weight loss when combined with a healthy diet.

What to Look for in a E-Bike for Overweight Person

Strong frame

Looking for a frame that’s made from strong materials like aluminium and steel is a good idea, as is finding a chunky frame with large section joints and plenty of weld between parts of the frame.

This shouldn’t be difficult, though – most e-bike frames from reputable brands will be very strong and well-made.

Sturdy wheels and wide tires

Double-wall wheel rims will be strong and load-bearing, and they’re pretty standard so you shouldn’t struggle to find them on an e-bike. You should also look for a wheel with more spokes, and smaller wheels are generally stronger than bigger ones, but they can be a bit bumpy to ride.

Wide tires are also a good idea, as they’re better for load-bearing, grip and stability. Anything over 2” in width can be considered ‘wide’.

Motor power and battery size

It makes sense that the more weight your e-bike needs to carry, the more powerful its motor should be. Of course, powering a powerful motor takes more energy, so it’s best to have a bigger battery too to ensure you keep a decent range – 500Wh is a decent benchmark battery capacity for daily commuting for heavier riders.

Folding electric bikes are an awesome bit of kit for city riders and commuters, but they’re not always blessed with the longest range.

On average, you can expect to get around 30 miles of range from each charge on a folding e-bike, which may well not be enough for a long commute or adventurous weekend ride, and will see you need to charge your bike much more often than you might want to.

However, there are bikes out there with a much longer range – even up to 125 miles, if you know where to look.

On this page, we’ll take you through a list of the top five long-range folding electric bikes, showing you just how far a folding e-bike can go.

Long Range Folding Electric Bikes

  1. MAX RANGE: 125 MILES / 200 KM

Fiido L3 Long Range Electric Bike

A relatively affordable, incredibly long-range bike that’s great for city riders and weekend cruisers alike.

  2. MAX RANGE: 100 MILES / 160 KM

    Lectric XPremium

A fat tyre bike with a huge range, this is the perfect bike for off-road folding bike adventurers.

  3. Tern Vektron S10

    MAX RANGE: 68 MILES / 106 KM

    Tern Vektron S10

A premium long-range folding bike with excellent components, a small folding size and clever design.

  4. Mate City

    MAX RANGE: 50 MILES / 80 KM

    Mate City

Perfect for urban riders who want the option of weekend adventures, with a decent range and all-terrain components.

  5. Brompton Electric C-Line

    MAX RANGE: 45 MILES / 70 KM

    Brompton Electric C-Line

An iconic, stylish and high-quality bike that’s lightweight and built to last.

Folding E-Bike Range vs Regular E-Bike Range

The average folding e-bike has a range of around 30 miles, or 50 kilometers, which is enough for many city riders.

With regular e-bikes, you can expect 22-50 miles on a single charge, but in some cases you can go even further, with some bikes boasting a range of over 80 miles.

Folding e-bikes are generally designed for city riders and urban commuters, with the smaller wheel size unable to deal with a wide range of terrains and the folding capabilities most useful when lifting into cars, onto public transport, or stowing in a small urban home – but that doesn’t mean that inner city riders don’t want the freedom of a longer range, too.

Are Folding Electric Bikes Worth It?

Folding electric bikes are absolutely worth it for city riders who want to use a variety of transport options on their route, arrive at their destination less tired and less sweaty, and who may not have the space to store a regular bike.

While e-bikes tend to have a reputation for being large and heavy, folding e-bikes can be much lighter and more compact.

Plus, when you consider that you don’t necessarily have to sacrifice the longer range of a regular e-bike when tapping into the convenience of a folding e-bike, it’s fair to say that they are definitely worth a look if you’re intrigued.

Shopping online is a great way to choose an e-bike, as you can take your time over your purchase, have access to lots of different stores and brands, and you might even get a better price than in a physical store.

On this page, we’ll take you through some of the best places to buy e-bikes online in the USA, so you can find the e-bike of your dreams without leaving your couch.

Buying an E-Bike in America

America is a playground for e-bike riders, with its incredible national parks, beautiful scenery, huge range of terrains and sprawling urban centres. If you’ve decided to buy an e-bike for your adventures across the states, it can be daunting to know where to begin.

The most important thing is to look for a reputable store with quality bikes that fit your budget.

Of course, you can shop for an e-bike at a brick and mortar store, and this has all sorts of benefits like being able to try before you buy, speak face-to-face with an e-bike expert, and even walk away with your new e-bike there and then.

Online shopping is great too, not least because it enables you to shop at whichever store you like, not being limited by the stores that are near to you geographically.

Wherever you shop, you should make sure to look out for e-bikes that are good value for your money, have the correct voltage for your needs (and which adhere to local laws if you’re using it on public roads), are from quality brands, and are appropriate for your intended use.

Where Can I Buy an Electric Bike?

Electric bikes are now so popular, you can buy them at most bike stores, whether online or in land-based stores. This is great news for e-bike shoppers, as you can take your pick of retailers to find one that offers exactly what you’re looking for.

Brick and mortar stores can be a great way to shop for an e-bike, as they allow you to have hands-on time with your potential purchase before you buy, and you can choose to support small, local, independent businesses or go for larger bike store chains.

You can also buy e-bikes online, which has the benefit of freeing you from restrictions like geographical availability and limited store stock. By shopping online for your e-bike, you can choose from a huge range of brands, models and styles to find the e-bike that suits you – and the best online e-bike stores offer bespoke advice if you need it, just like their land-based counterparts.

confused cyclist wondering about highway code.

There are lots of misconceptions around what it is legal and illegal for cyclists to do on the roads, or even what cyclists should be doing to be a considerate road user. This confusion has resulted in many an argument between motorists and cyclists, and contributes towards accidents on the roads.

In early 2022, the Highway Code was updated to improve clarity, implementing a hierarchy of road users depending on the amount of risk they pose. This gave cyclists some more freedoms to better protect themselves, for example formalising the advice to ride in the middle of the lane where safer, but also some more responsibilities when it comes to protecting more vulnerable road users like pedestrians and horses.

Here, we’ll take you through all of the laws, rules and guidelines in the UK Highway Code for cyclists, explaining what you legally can and cannot do, what you should do for your own safety and the safety of others, and explain how these rules have changed from the previous Highway Code.

UK Highway Code for Cyclists: Summary

Rules 59 to 82 of the Highway Code are concentrated on cycling, but the official documents can be a bit wordy. Below, we’ve summarised the key rules and recommendations for cyclign in Britain, including what cycling can legally do, what they are advised to do and what they are not allowed to do.

Cyclists Can Legally:

Ride in the centre of the lane on quieter roads, in slower moving traffic, and at junctions/road narrowings (Rule 72)

Ride in bus lanes (Rule 65)

Ride two abreast (Rule 66)

Take priority when going straight ahead at a junction (Rule 76)

Ride in the left or right-hand lane on roundabouts (Rule 79)

Cycle across toucan crossings which are shared by cyclists and pedestrians (Rule 82)

Not wear a helmet (Rule 59)

Bike helmets are recommended by wearing one is not a legal requirement

Cyclists Should (Optional):

Wear a Helmet (Rule 59)

Wear fluorescent/light-coloured clothing for visibility (Rule 59)

Not carry anything that could make them lose control of their bike (Rule 66)

Park their bike sensibly in a way that doesn’t cause an obstruction or hazard (Rule 70)

Keep 0.5m away from the kerb on busy roads, and further where safer (Rule 72)

Allow faster moving vehicles to overtake where safe to do so (Rule 72)

Keep 0.5m away from the kerb on busy roads, and further where safer

Cyclists Must Not:

Have no lights on their bike: Cyclists must have white front and red rear lights lit at night, and bikes must be fitted with a red rear reflector and amber pedal reflectors, if manufactured after 1/10/85 (Rule 60)

Enter into the pedestrian footpath when using cycle tracks (Rule 62)

Cycle on a pavement (Rule 64)

Carry a passenger unless the bike has been built or adapted to do so (Rule 68)

Hold onto a moving vehicle or trailer (Rule 68)

Ride dangerously, carelessly or inconsiderately (Rule 68)

Ride when under the influence of drugs or alcohol, including medicine (Rule 68)

Ignore traffic signs and traffic light signals (Rule 69)

Cross the stop line at a red light (Rule 71)

Highway Code for Cyclists: All 23 Rules and Laws

Rule 59: Cyclists should avoid wearing clothing that can get caught in the chain or obscure bicycle lights. They should also wear a cycle helmet that conforms to the current regulations, is the correct size and is correctly fastened, and fluorescent/light-coloured clothing is recommended for visibility.

Rule 60: At night you must have white front and red rear lights lit, and your bike must be fitted with a red rear reflector and amber pedal reflectors, if manufactured after 1/10/85.

Rule 61: Use cycle lanes where they make your journey safer and easier – cyclists are not obliged to use them.

Rule 62: When using cycle tracks – routes for cyclists that are physically protected from motor traffic – cyclists must keep to the side intended for cyclists and not enter into the pedestrian footpath. If there is no separate footpath, you should take care when passing pedestrians.

Rule 63: Take care when passing pedestrians, horse riders or horse-drawn vehicles – do not pass them at speed or too close, and you should not pass a horse on its left.

Rule 64: You must not cycle on a pavement.

Rule 65: Most bus lanes can be used by cyclists as indicated on signs. Be careful when doing so. Do not pass between the kerb and a bus when it is at a stop.

You should not pass a horse on its left

Rule 66: Cyclists should:

  • Ensure they keep control of their cycle, including not carrying anything that could make them lose their balance or that might get tangled in bike
  • Be considerate of other road users in general, including using a bell to make their presence known
  • Be considerate of other road users when riding in groups, including allowing drivers to overtake when you think it’s safe
  • Not ride close behind a vehicle in case it stops suddenly

Rule 67: You should:

  • Remain aware of your surroundings by looking around before turning or pulling away
  • Look out for obstructions in the road
  • Leave a door’s width or one metre when passing parked vehicles
  • Watch out for pedestrians stepping into your path
  • Be aware of other road users
  • Use signals to show your intention
  • Take care near traffic calming features like road humps and narrowings
  • Only pass on the left of large vehicles when cycling on the road

Rule 68: You must not:

  • Carry a passenger unless your bike has been built or adapted to do so
  • Hold onto a moving vehicle or trailer
  • Ride dangerously, carelessly or inconsiderately
  • Ride when under the influence of drugs or alcohol, including medicine
Don't carry an additional passenger unless your bike has been built or adapted to do so

Rule 69: You must obey all traffic signs and traffic light signals.

Rule 70: When parking your bike, find a conspicuous location where it can be seen by passers-by, use cycle parking facilities where possible, don’t create an obstruction or hazard, and secure it well.

Rule 71: At traffic lights, you must not cross the stop line when the lights are red.

Rule 72: Road positioning – there are two basic positions to adopt depending on the situation.

  1. Ride in the centre of your lane to make yourself as visible as possible – this is used on quiet roads, in slower moving traffic, and when approaching junctions or narrowings where it’d be unsafe for drivers to overtake you
  2. On the left – On busy roads, you should keep 0.5 metres away from the kerb, and further where it’s safer. You should allow faster-moving vehicles to overtake where it is safe to do so.

Rule 73: At junctions:

  • Use cycle facilities, eg small cycle traffic lights, where it’s safer and easier to do so
  • If there are no separate cycle facilities, act like you’re driving a motor vehicle
  • Position yourself in the centre of your lane where safe. If this doesn’t feel safe, you can dismount and walk your bike across the junction.
When turning into or out of a side road, give way to pedestrians

Rule 74: When turning:

  • If turning left, watch out for other vehicles turning into or out of the side road. Check for other cyclists or motorcyclists before signalling, and do not ride on the inside of vehicles signalling or slowing down to turn left.
  • If turning right, check the traffic then signal and move into the centre of the road, waiting for a safe gap before turning. You might want to dismount and push your bike across the road if safer.
  • When turning into or out of a side road, give way to pedestrians.

Rule 75: Two stage turns – at some signal-controlled junctions, cyclists may be instructed to turn right in two stages:

  1. When the traffic lights go green, cyclists turning should go straight ahead to the location on the road marked with a cycle symbol and turn arrow, and wait.
  2. When the traffic lights on the far side of the junction which are now facing the cyclists are green, they can then turn.

Rule 76: When going straight ahead at a junction, you have priority over traffic waiting to turn into or out of a side road, unless road markings say otherwise. Be aware of other drivers, especially slow-moving lorries and other long vehicles.

Rule 77: When crossing fast or busy main roads, you might find it safer and easier to push your bike across on foot, wait for a safe gap in the traffic to cross, and make use of traffic islands to help.

Rule 78: When using a roundabout without cycle facilities, adhere to rules 184 to 190 of the Highway Code.

Rule 79: At roundabouts, you can ride in the left or right-hand lane, moving left when approaching your exit and signalling right to show when you aren’t leaving the roundabout. It’s also fine to dismount and walk your bike on the pavement or verge if you feel safer doing so. You should always watch out for traffic and be aware that drivers may not easily see you.

Where a roundabout has separate cycle facilities, use them if they make your journey safer and easier – but you’re not obliged to use them.

It's fine to dismount and walk your bike on the pavement or verge at a roundabout if you feel safer

Rule 80: Give plenty of room to long vehicles on a roundabout – do not ride in the space they need to get around it.

Rule 81: Do not ride across equestrian crossings. Do not ride across a pelican, puffin or zebra crossing. Dismount and wheel your bike across.

Rule 82: You are allowed to cycle across toucan crossings, which are push-button operated light-controlled crossings allowing cyclists and pedestrians to share crossing space and cross at the same time.

Cycle tracks on the opposite sides of the road might be linked by cycle-only signalled crossings – you may ride across these but you must not do so until the light is green, and you should be aware of pedestrians.

Take extra care when crossing level crossings and tramways, and make sure to dismount where a ‘cyclist dismount’ sign is displayed.

New Highway Code Rules for Cyclists

In early 2022, the Highway Code was updated with some changes for motorists and cyclists alike, to enhance safety for all road users.

The updated code introduced a hierarchy of road users, which means that those who pose the greatest risk to others have a higher level of responsibility, placing drivers at the top.

Hierarchy of road users

Cyclists have a higher responsibility than horses and pedestrians, so should be particularly aware of their safety, but nonetheless should have regard for all road users’ safety as well as their own.

As such, cyclists should not pass pedestrians, people on horses or horse-drawn vehicles at speed. You are now advised to slow down when necessary, let people know you’re there, and not pass a horse on its left-hand side.

Cyclists have long been advised to ride in the centre of the lane for better visibility and to deter unsafe overtaking, but the Highway Code has now been updated to formalise this advice. It states that cyclists should cycle in the middle of the lane on quiet roads, in slow-moving traffic, and when approaching junctions/road narrowings, and also says that cyclists should maintain 0.5m distance from the kerb when on busier or faster roads.

The new code also clarifies that cyclists can ride two abreast. This has always been the case, but it is often a source of conflict on roads and the change in the language emphasises rider safety.

It also confirms that cyclists can pass stationary or slow-moving traffic on the right or the left.

The 2022 update to the Highway Code also has new rules for cyclists at junctions, for example that, when turning into or out of a junction, cyclists should give way to people who are crossing or waiting to cross. The new Rule 75 outlines two-stage turns at some signal-controlled junctions, and the new code also says that cyclists now have right of way when cycling straight ahead at junctions unless signs say otherwise.

Bicycle vs Car at junction

Plus, the update clarifies that cyclists have priority on roundabouts, and that drivers/motorcyclists shouldn’t pass cyclists in their lane.

Bicycle Highway Code FAQs:

  • Are Cyclists Allowed to Ride Side-by-Side?

Yes, cyclists can ride side-by-side two abreast, and it may be safer to do so in certain situations. That said, cyclists should always be considerate of other road users when riding in groups, including allowing drivers to overtake when you think it’s safe.

  • Are Cyclists Allowed on Dual Carriageways?

Yes, cyclists are allowed on dual carriageways, provided there are no signs saying otherwise, but it is not always likely to be a pleasant or safe experience, given how fast traffic moves on dual carriageways.

  • Are Cyclists Allowed on A-Roads?

Yes, cyclists can ride on A-roads, as long as there are no signs saying otherwise. Cyclists are also not allowed to join part of an A-road if it’s designated as a motorway, for example the A1(M).

  • Are Cyclists Allowed in the Bus Lane?

Yes, most bus lanes can be used by cyclists as indicated on signs. You should always be careful when doing so, and especially do not pass between the kerb and a bus when it is at a stop.

  • Are Cyclists Allowed to Run Red Lights?

No, all road users must stop at red lights, including cyclists.

  • Are Cyclists Allowed on Motorways?

No, cyclists are not allowed on motorways – it is illegal to ride a bicycle on the motorway.

  • Are Cyclists Allowed on Pavements?

No, Rule 64 of the Highway Code says you must not cycle on a pavement.

  • Are Cyclists Allowed to Undertake?

Technically, yes, cyclists are allowed to undertake – there is no law to prohibit doing so. However, you should only pass on the left of vehicles when it is safe to do so, i.e. not when they are signalling or slowing to turn left. You should never pass a horse on its left.

  • Can Cyclists Use Mobile Phones?

Technically, yes. It’s not a specific offence to use a mobile phone while cycling, but Rule 66 of the Highway Code states that cyclists should make sure they keep control of their bike, and Rule 68 says it is illegal to ride dangerously, carelessly or inconsiderately.

  • Can Cyclists Wear Headphones?

Yes, legally cyclists can wear headphones, but as a road user you should always ride with due care and attention and ensure you are always fully aware of your surroundings.

  • Can Cyclists Use Pedestrian Crossings?

Cyclists cannot ride across pelican, puffin or zebra crossings, but they can ride across toucan crossings, which are push-button operated light-controlled crossings allowing cyclists and pedestrians to share crossing space and cross at the same time.
