One of cycling’s great fallacies is that it’s all lycra and helmets, carbon fiber and clip-cloppy shoes. Yes, cycling is a sport – a fun one at that – but it’s also a mode of transport, a way of getting around.

Whilst we definitely wouldn’t stop you from riding a bike in your everyday clothing, the odd cycling-specific garment is a godsend, especially in wet or cold weather.

Cleverhood’s Urbanuat Trench is a three-quarter-length jacket that protects riders from rain. Fabric technology gives the jacket extra visibility, plus other features make it useful for cycling.

In case you haven’t heard of them before, from their base in Rhode Island – a state with the 9th most yearly rainfall, Cleverhood curates a range of outwear for adults and kids, alongside other accessories.

The Urbanaut Trench is Cleverhood’s most expensive jacket, sitting atop their range, above the Zipster Jacket and the Rover Anorak. Lucy recently reviewed the Rover Anorak and found it was “the perfect solution to keep you warm, dry, and visible when riding.”

Cleverhood Urbanaut Trench Fit

The Urbanaut is sold in five sizes, XS through to XL, with the slim, unisex fit manufactured to fit a broad range of wearers. The three-quarter trench-style design offers extra coverage against the rain.

It has a raglan sleeve (stitched from the underarm up to the collarbone rather than at the shoulder) to give greater freedom of movement.

At the end of the sleeves, velcro cuffs can be utilised to provide the best fit in this area. For a good cycling jacket, I think this is a mandatory feature.

A kick pleat or slit in the rear of the jacket ensures the jacket doesn’t gather too tightly when sat in the saddle.

Overall, I found the trench a little too snug when riding – particularly in the armpit area when reaching for the handlebars. I couldn’t level that same criticism at the Jack Wolfskin jacket that I recently reviewed, but I should preface this with the fact that I am very tall, with long arms, and right at the limits of the Urbanauts XL sizing guide.

For those worried about the overall fit of the trench, Cleverhood provides a very helpful size guide for the jacket, with clear measurements for chest, arm length and front length.

Cleverhood Urbanaut Features

With fully taped seams and a waterproof coating, the Trench shrugged off some heavy summer showers while I was wearing it. Cleverhood states that the waterproof rating of the Urbanaut is 15k or 15,000mm.

The zips on the Urbanaut are extremely robust. When it’s already raining and your wheels need to roll, it’s a comforting feeling hearing that ‘zzzppppppp’ sound. Made by YKK, the ‘Aquaguard’ zipper can be zipped up from the bottom too, in order to allow for some venting.

The peak is very large – noticeably larger than other jackets I’ve had experience with, but when it was raining cats and dogs, it’s a feature I came to appreciate.

Cleverhood is very clear in stating that the hood should be worn under the helmet – that way it gives the best coverage and the best vision when riding. Whilst for most this will be fine, I found it fairly tricky to get comfortable with both the hood deployed and my helmet on – it was snug fit!

That’s not a particularly important gripe for me, because for trips wearing the Urbanaut – rides to the local shop and the like – I wouldn’t normally choose to wear a helmet, but it’s worth noting nonetheless.

The hood has three points where it can be tightened – on each side and at the rear. This way you can fine-tune the fit to your favour.

Although you can’t see it during the day, the Urbanaut Trench is made from fabric that’s embedded with 3M Scotchlite reflective material – look closely at the garment and you can see the thread that’s been weaved in.

Clearly, during the day it means the jacket doesn’t stand out like a beacon, but at night, when light is shined upon it, it really comes alive. If you ride predominately in town or on busy routes with cars and other cyclists, it’s a feature that you’d most definitely welcome.

The Urbanaut has two pockets, again protected by the weather by those robust YKK zips, providing a decent amount of storage for phones, keys and wallets. It would be nice to have another storage option, perhaps inside the jacket or a smaller option on the chest – maybe I’m being picky here.

Is the Cleverhood Urbanaut Trench worth it?

Available in three colours, the Cleverhood Urbanaut Trench is priced at $289 – shipping to the US is extra, with Cleverhood offering international shipping at various rates.

Yes, it’s quite expensive but the high waterproof rating more than makes up for that. It covers the fashion-function divide too, plus buy it and you’ll have supported a small, US-based business that gives 5% of its profits to causes that promote street equality.

I have been a fan of Cleverhood since I saw their yellow Rover Anorak jackets being worn at a Bike Bus in the USA via social media.

I was immediately taken aback by the bright colour, innovative design and practicality, as well as their support of a great initiative as they donate 5% of their profits to street equity organisations. 

From waterproof capes to their Cleverhat, they have a wide range of products designed to keep you warm, dry and visible when you cycle. 

Although I was tempted by the War on Cars option, I was keen to test the Bike Bus version of their Rover Anorak jacket as I have high hopes of setting one up locally, and it seemed like the best option for my needs.  

First Impressions

My jacket arrived carefully wrapped with a lovely red bow. Along with the jacket, inside there was a helpful information card. 

I was pleased to learn that Cleverhood has a female designer and founder, Susan Mocarski, who took it upon herself to design high quality, practical and stylish unisex rainwear for cycling as she noticed a gap in the market that needed to be filled. 

Despite me being quite petite, I was pleasantly surprised to find the small size fitted incredibly well. The helpful option to adjust the sleeves via velcro was welcome. I also appreciated the use of ‘Roomy’ to describe the larger size options. 

As the brand name suggests, the hood is the focus of these jackets and rightfully so. It feels sturdy and is easily adjustable. As a glasses wearer it also gave me hope that for the first time my glasses may be protected from rain while cycling thanks to the handy stiff peak as usually I have to take them off! 

I was also struck by the overall quality of the jacket. Compared to other rainwear, it is incredibly light and feels very comfortable, rather than heavy and cheap. 

Key Features

Testing

Thankfully the arrival of the jacket coincided with a very rainy time of year (the sunshine in the photos was a rare day of no rain!) so I had plenty of opportunity to put it to the test.

I greatly appreciate how much thought has gone into all aspects of the design of this jacket. 

Starting with the hood, it worked so well underneath my helmet and kept my head and face (and glasses!) dry. This was aided by the handy zipper which made sure my upper half was completely covered. 

I experienced one of my wettest commutes ever while wearing the Rover Anorak but remained completely dry, plus my jacket dried very quickly when I got to work. It also helped me to keep warm but felt breathable thanks to good air flow.  

Similarly I wore it off my bike for a few hours in continuous rain but marvelled at how water repellent the material is as the beads of rain just slipped off. Again, both me and my pocket contents stayed dry despite the relentless downpour. 

The large pocket was invaluable for storing my phone and keys, and it also features a waterproof zipper. Despite the additional weight it did not feel difficult to ride with the pocket loaded. The option to tuck your hands in behind the pocket was also helpful for when I wore the jacket off the bike.  

The long back was great in keeping the top of my bottom half dry, and also warm on the days when it has been rainy and windy. 

I also felt assured cycling in the dark thanks to the subtle but effective reflective elements on the front and back of the jacket. 

Verdict

Until now whenever it rained I had been wearing my standard rain jacket and often ended up still being soggy. The Rover Anorak is therefore without doubt my new go-to cycling jacket for the rain. It is stylish, comfortable and incredibly practical both on and off the bike. 

Unlike most of my other cycling clothing, my friends, family and colleagues have all complimented the jacket every time I wear it, including my sister who is so taken by it she is looking to get one!

If you’re looking for any waterproof gloves or socks, Sealskinz is likely a brand that will quickly present itself to you.

Sealskinz even say they invented the first-ever waterproof sock over 20 years ago. So it’s safe to say they know a thing or two about how to keep your feet and hands dry.

And that’s why, in the pursuit of finding the best waterproof cycling gloves, Sealskinz was a brand that I simply had to test out.

In this guide, I’m going to be discussing my experience with the Sealskinz All-Weather Cycle Glove and weather it is a truly waterproof glove for cycling (preview: pool test involved!) and indeed if it should be a contender for the best winter cycling gloves overall.

Sealskinz Cycling Gloves Review

Along with the PROVIZ Waterproof Cycling Gloves, these are premium waterproof gloves and cost accordingly (£50 /€60 /$70). Such a pricetag for a pair of gloves means you expect high standards, and the Sealskinz doesn’t disappoint.

These gloves are 100% waterproof. No messing about. I popped these gloves on and dipped them in a swimming pool for over a minute and I didn’t even feel the coolness of the water, let alone a drop of moisture.

Nor will you feel the wind when riding in these gloves. It’s a tough membrane protecting your hands and they’ll keep you warm even in sub-zero temperatures.

But as I say, these are premium waterproof cycling gloves, so staying warm and dry are expected.

The question is: are these gloves worth the high price tag?

Sealskinz All-Weather Cycle Gloves [PROS + CONS]

Considering how much protection they provide your hands from the elements, the Sealskinz Waterproof Cycling Gloves are impressively dextrous. You can close your hand in a fist (or simply hold your handlebars) without the glove resisting you in any significant way.

There is also padding on the palm to provide with you extra comfort during long rides and the gloves provide reasonable wrist coverage (this is where it beats the PROVIZ alternative) and an easy cuff adjuster that doesn’t bunch the material.

There is a reflective strip running across the top of the glove, but this isn’t hugely visible and certainly doesn’t offer the kind of visibility are PROVIZ – if you even care, of course.

Sealskinz have, though, done a great job in creating a really good-looking glove. These certainly wouldn’t strike you as “functional sportswear”, although that is effectively what they are. But that’s great – I love stylish functionality.

After realising my pathetic little woollen Everton gloves were not suitable for winter rides, I’ve been on a mission to find the best waterproof gloves for cycling.

And I had a checklist for what I wanted from a winter cycling glove. It should be:

• Waterproof
• Windproof
• Warm
• Comfortable
• Dexterous
• Touchscreen-friendly

I felt they were the functional keys to a good cycling glove. Of course, there’s also bonus points for style and reflective detailing and such – as is always the case when I’m looking for cycling waterproofs.

After reading some online reviews and such, I narrowed my search down to four pairs of gloves across a range of budgets : the high-end Sealskinz All-Weather Cycling Glove and PROVIZ REFLECT360 Cycling Gloves, the mid-range GripGrab Waterproof Knitted Winter Glove and finally the cheap Amazon pick: “Yobenki” Cycling Gloves.

PROVIZ Waterproof Gloves Review

First off, it’s worth nothing that the PROVIZ gloves aren’t cheap. They retail for £49.99 ($70) and, along with the Sealskinz, were my premium pick of rainproof gloves. However, the colourful versions of the PROVIZ gloves (which have reflective detail rather than PROVIZ’s unmissable “REFLECT 360” panels) are available for £10/$5 cheaper.

So, what does the PROVIZ REFLECT360 glove bring to the table?

The Best Reflective Cycling Gloves (by Far…)

The thing PROVIZ are most famous for (as it’s name alludes to) is visibility. PROVIZ make a whole range of hi-viz cycling gear, including jackets, bag covers and more. And PROVIZ aren’t messing about with little reflective strips here and there – there gear has entire reflective panels that are visible from every direction (hence “REFLECT360”) and their gloves are no different.

As you can see in the picture below, when it comes to reflective cycling gloves, the PROVIZ is on a whole different level compared to its competitors.

But these gloves aren’t just reflective cycling gloves. They actually tick every box in what we’re looking for in a winter cycling glove. They are 100% waterproof. They are 100% windproof. They are warm. They are comfortable. They are quite dexterous. You can use your phone while you use them.

I could end the PROVIZ REFLECT360 Glove review there, based on that.

But the question is really are the PROVIZ gloves worth the £50/$70 price tag?

PROVIZ REFLECT360 Gloves [PROS + CONS]

As I say, the PROVIZ tick every feature box. But with a premium glove, we expect top quality. And, in fairness, PROVIZ delivers.

These are nice gloves to wear and I’d recommend wearing them for temperatures as low as -10°C (I can’t comment below this as I simply haven’t submerged myself beneath such disgusting temperatures.

I haven’t even bothered to look up their official “waterproof rating” as I conducted my own research (by dipping them in a swimming pool – see the video review for proof) and can confirm that these gloves are categorically unequivocally completely and utterly 100% waterproof.

They also have some nice padding on the inside of the glove so that handling your bike on long rides won’t get uncomfortable.

So, are these gloves perfect? No. Not quite. There are a couple of areas I think they could be improved…

For first (minor) issue, the gloves don’t really go much beyond the wrist, meaning your forearms can be a little exposed to the cold unless your jacket does a good job covering them up.

The second thing I’m not wild on these gloves is the adjustable cuff straps around the wrist. It’s good they have these straps, but the material can bunch up a bit when you make them tighter (and as someone with ridiculously skinny wrists for a grown man, is required).

Obviously these aren’t fatal flaws in what is an otherwise near perfect product, but there is still some room for improvement.

Are PROVIZ REFLECT360 Waterproof Cycling Gloves Worth It?

So, are the PROVIZ REFLECT360 Gloves worth £50/$70? I’d say they absolutely are.

Yes, you can buy cheaper waterproof gloves – and if you’re on a budget, you should absolutely do that.

But if you want a fantastic pair of gloves that will 100% keep your hands warm and dry on winter rides, as well as allow you to quickly use your phone and increase your visibility, the PROVIZ REFLECT360 Waterproof Cycling Gloves are a fantastic option.

I tested out the “Reflective” model of these gloves, but you can also find more colourful versions of the PROVIZ Waterproof Cycling Gloves (not “REFLECT360” – meaning they have reflect detailing rather than a completely reflective exterior) in orange, blue, pink, yellow and black. It’s also worth noting the colourful variants are £10/$5 cheaper than the REFLECT360 gloves.

A lightweight hardshell cycling jacket. That’s what you really want when the heavens open. Wear a couple of warmer layers beneath and allow the Helly Hansen Ride Jacket to repel any rain that comes your way.

This is simply a stylish rain jacket – regardless of whether you’re on a bike or not. But with reflective detailing, adjustable cuffs, a slightly dropped rear and lots of deep secure pockets (some buttoned, some zippered), this is a wonderful waterproof jacket for bike commuters.

DUER All-Weather Denim

I rave about these jeans all the time. Essentially, they are waterproof cycling jeans. But they’re also beautiful to look at and comfortable to wear.

But while you may recognise this bag’s beauty at first glance, what you may not spot is that this bag is also completely waterproof, offers plenty secure storage (including a laptop section) as well as the main body being reflective (i.e. everything in grey is reflective). Shine a light on this bag and you won’t miss it.

Chrome Storm 415 Traction Boot

Chrome’s 415 boot have ruled the stylish waterproof cycling footwear category and the latest version of this shoe is absolutely phenomenal.

This shoe is completely and utterly waterproof (I’ve even dipped my foot in a swimming pool to prove this), looks fantastic, has a sturdy sole for effective cycling and is also very comfortable to walk around in.

PROVIZ Reflect360 Waterproof Cycling Gloves

Forgetting to put a pair of gloves on ahead of winter ride can be a painful mistake. But making sure they’re waterproof is vital too.

The PROVIZ Reflect 360 gloves are the ideal cycling gloves. As well as being waterproof, they’re also reflective and are touchscreen friendly.

There’s nothing worse than wet feet. I’d rather be slapped with a rusty old chain than sit in soggy socks all day.

The trouble is, when you’re riding your bicycle in winter, there’s a real risk that it’s going to be wet. That’s why I previously asked 42 cyclists how to keep your feet dry while cycling, as well as created guides about the best waterproof socks and overshoes you can buy.

For me, though, the best option is undoubtedly having waterproof shoes. It’s just less hassle and stops the problem at the source.

Previously, Chrome’s 415 Storm boot topped our best waterproof shoes for commuting list. And now Chrome have created a new version of the 415, the Storm 415 Traction Boot.

So how does the new version compare to the old one? Is it actually an improvement or should they have left a really good shoe in peace?

I’ve been finding out…

The New Chrome 415 Storm Traction Boot

Make no mistake about it, the Chrome’s original 415 shoe was really good. In many ways, it was the ideal “normal” bike shoe. It had a nice stiff sole, it kept water out, it was relatively comfortable, you could walk in it without problem. The only two areas I felt could have been improved (for me, at least) was that the fit was quite narrow and the glue sealing the sole to the panels started giving away after a few months of intense use

So, what has Chrome done differently with the new 415 Traction?

Well, the most noticeable thing when you put them on is that the fit is substantially wider. Whereas the old version nestled your toes together, the new Traction model is extremely spacious. For someone with pretty wide feet, this is absolutely welcome. The added width also makes walking for extended periods more comfortable as it allows your feet to move more naturally.

It’s worth noting that these shoes run quite large in size, so if you’re on the cusp between sizes, it’s certainly wise to order half a size down.

With regards to the glue element, I can’t yet comment on their longevity as I’ve only been wearing them for two months. But so far, at least, the Chrome Storm 415 Traction Boot shoes no sign of giving way at any point and they certainly seem more sturdy than their predecessors.

Waterproof “Normal” Cycling Shoes

Like most of the gear Chrome Industries produce, the 415 boot is aimed at people who ride bikes, but there’s nothing to stop anyone using these shoes even if they never go near a bike in their life. Chrome’s perfectly toe the line between style and function and I love it.

Is the Chrome 415 Really Waterproof?

Yes. Chrome Storm 415 Traction Boot is 100% waterproof. The upper is made from waterproof leather while the outsole is made from “vulcanised rubber” and the midsole has an equally impressive sounding “PowerPlate nylon shank”. Whatever that means, this shoe is completely and utterly waterproof.

What’s the more, the benefit of having the boot cut is that it also prevents rain getting in via the sides of the shoe.

I even dipped them in a swimming pool and my feet stayed completely dry.

As the “traction” part of the name alludes to, these shoes are also extremely grippy – which is especially great for pedalling and walking on wet days.

Reflective Shoe Laces

The shoes ] come with two pairs of shoelaces. When they arrive, the majority of the shoe is laced up with the black laces, before adding a stylish look with red laces finishing up the top two holes. However, wearing two pairs of laces isn’t practical, so I promptly pulled out the red laces and proceeded with the black ones, which also look great with a mixture of red and reflective silver thread woven into them.

The shoe pull on the rear of the boot also has a chunky reflective strip. Such subtle details are always a welcome boost to your visibility.

Chrome 415 Storm Traction Boot Review [SUMMARY]

I really like the old version of the 415, but Chrome have taken the new Traction version to a whole new level. I can confidently say these are my favourite urban cycling shoes now. They look great and they feel great – regardless of whether you’re on two wheels or two feet. I’m wearing them everyday at the moment, come rain or shine.

The Chrome 415 comes in two colours (black or brown) and is available for around $160 (£158/€170).

Obviously, that’s not cheap. But these are truly fantastic waterproof shoes for urban life and I couldn’t recommend them more highly.

Best Waterproof Cycling Jackets for Men

What to Look for in a Rain Jacket for Cycling

Waterproofing is the most obvious and first thing that you should look for in a jacket. Every jacket comes with a waterproofing rating so you can get a good idea of what to expect. Some jackets claim to be waterproof but are only useful in light rain.

The fabric should be breathable (you don’t want heat and sweat to build up inside) and lightweight so that it doesn’t impede your cycling motion. Tapered seams will stop water from infiltrating at the joints and a high collar is fantastic to keep wind chill at bay. Some jackets also come with a “dropped tail.” This protects you from water splashing off your back wheel.

Look out for visibility features too. Since you’ll mostly be wearing your jacket in the cold, dark winter months, reflective strips are all but essential. Jackets vary in what they offer. Some are fully reflective, others come with reflective strips on the back or the shoulders. Price, of course, is a factor. Jackets range from budget to mmore expensive options like Gore-Tex. Finally, make sure that the jacket has enough pockets to store your cycling essentials.

To Hood or Not to Hood

Whether or not to wear a hooded jacket remains one of the great cycling debates! Hoods are useful because they provide extra protection against the rain and the wind and they’ll keep you feeling a little warmer in winter.

On the other hand, a loose hood is a cyclist’s worst nightmare. Hoods that flap around impair vision and can even be dangerous. The last thing you want to do is cycle along a dark road in the rain with a hood covering half of your vision. Hoods also add weight (creating drag) and some accumulate water. Moisture can gather on top and then drip down as you cycle, making for an uncomfortable experience.

What to Look for in a Rain Jacket for Cycling

The primary purpose you’re looking for in a rain jacket is for it to keep you dry. However, it is likely you may wear this jacket when it isn’t raining so it is helpful to consider other factors.

Firstly, is it comfortable and breathable? Trespass defines breathability as “the ability of a fabric to absorb moisture and release it through the material itself, allowing it to breathe“. Basically a breathable material will stop you from overheating, and will also allow air flow.

Secondly, how easily does it pack away? Perhaps you just got caught in a short shower, or the forecast predicted rain but it stayed dry. In this situation it is useful if your jacket is lightweight, compact and foldable so you can strap it to your pannier rack, or pop it in your bag.

Waterproof vs Water Resistant Jackets

We’ve established that the main feature we’re looking for in a rain jacket is to keep you dry and we’ve mentioned that jackets can be waterproof or water resistant, but what does this mean?

It is an important distinction to understand as it is the difference between staying dry in a heavy downpour, or running the risk of getting a bit wet. The Mountain Warehouse has put together this useful guide to explain the two terms in more detail.

Essentially, water resistant jackets have a waterproofing repellent coating which will repel beads of water so they roll off but they do not have taped seams. When it comes to finding the ideal jacket for commuting in milder weather, there are three things I really want from it.

And as you may have cleverly deciphered from the name of this post, those three key elements are being: lightweight, breathable and waterproof.

Essentially, I want a jacket that will keep me dry on the outside if it rains, without making sweat profusely on the inside.

The trouble is, while there is no shortage of waterproof hardshell jackets out there, finding one that is actually breathable is far less common.

So, I spoke with Scottish brand, Endura, to find out how/if a lightweight, breathable and waterproof cycling jacket is possible and what goes into creating one.

This post is in collaboration with Endura, a maverick cycling brand that has been providing riders with comfortable and functional cycling apparel since 1993.

The Problem with Waterproof Jackets

There is a fundamental paradox that comes with designing a truly waterproof jacket. The common logic would be that if you want to keep water out, you need to make sure the outer material – as well as all of its seams – are impenetrable. And that does work at preventing water from entering. But that mission is entirely in vain if this causes your body to sweat more and thus generate your own reservoir of sweat that can’t escape.

So, the challenge for any breathable waterproof jacket is to stop water coming in, but allowing moisture to go out.

Fortunately, there is some good news. Perspiration droplets are considerably smaller than that of other water (including rain). If you were to create a “sieve effect” whereby the wholes in the sieve where small enough to prevent rain entering, but large enough to let perspiration to escape, you would create a breathable product. Hallejulah!

Cycling in the rain. That’s when your choice of attire really matter.

Get it wrong, and you’ll rock up at your destination as a mess. Soggy trousers. Soggy feet. Soggy head. Soggy everything.

If you want to stay dry when you’re riding, you essentially face two options:

1. Wear water-resistant clothes (great for shorter rides in light rain)
2. Create a waterproof cocoon with waterproof overshoes, overtrousers and a rain jacket (a necessary evil in extreme downpours)

Finding truly waterproof trousers that look and feel good is an almost impossible task. There are some great water resistant trousers for commuting (which I covered in detail here), but they’re not completely impenetrable. So if it gets extreme, you’ll need to opt for waterproof overtrousers.

But with jackets, there’s a bit more scope. There are some genuinely good-looking truly waterproof bike jackets out there that are even breathable.

And I checked out the wordy Helly Hansen Ride Hooded Cycling Rain Jacket to see if it was one of them.

Helly Hansen Cycling Rain Jacket

Now, first things first… this is a nice-looking jacket – especially for a hardshell rain jacket.

It’s a simple design, but unlike other waterproof jackets, it has a nice straight fit and contours the body well.

It’s available in black (as pictured), plus “Sweet Lime” (bright yellow), if you like to be very visible.

There’s everything you’d expect from a cycling rain jacket: adjustable cuffs, a slightly dropped back to shelter your rear and several pockets.

One thing that also surprised me is that this jacket also features reflective detailing. Surprising in the way that when I was writing this review initially – I made a comment that it’s a shame that there is no reflectivity. However, after taking a flash photo of this jacket – I discovered that this isn’t the case. On the contrary, all the white text and icons on the black jacket (the grey features on the yellow version) are actually reflective. In normal daylight, you’d never think this is the case, so I’d say that’s a big win for this jacket as other “reflective jackets” start gleaming in any indoor light, which can look a bit silly in casual settings.

Genuinely Breathable

This Helly Hansen jacket weighs in at just 480 grams, so there’s no doubt that it’s lightweight. But it’s also extremely breathable. This isn’t one of those jackets that keeps the rain out but feels like a sauna on the inside, it’s lightweight and well-ventilated. I’d go as far to say that it’s the ideal spring/summer jacket, especially if you’re worried about rain.

The other great thing I like about this jacket is that it can also be rolled up to be extremely compact, which means you can pop it in a bag without taking up much space.

Hooded Cycling Jacket

Notably, this is a hooded jacket – which can be somewhat of a controversial topic amongst the cycling community.

Why? Because hoods aren’t aerodynamic. And I don’t mean like marginal gains and Lycra aerodynamic – having a loose hood while facing a headwind can be like having a parachute behind you – and parachutes, by design, are made to slow you down.

However, if I’m caught in a downpour, I’d prefer it if my head stays dry as well as my body.

The good thing with the Helly Hansen hood is that it fits well around the head – not leaving too much unnecessary space, but not acting like an extra piece of skin on your head either.

When you’re riding with the hood up, it does a good job of staying in place. It’s also got a lot adjustable chords around the head and neck so you can make it even more secure if you like, while the hood has an almost “cap” over the forehead, providing you with a welcome bit of extra coverage for your face. All of these touches ensure that the hood won’t be slowing you down while you’re riding in the rain.

When you’re riding with the hood down, it’s not quite as practical. In normal conditions it’s fine and doesn’t get in the way, but when I’m facing a particularly strong headwind, it doesn’t create a bit of a parachute effect. My inelegant solution to this was to shove the hood down inside the jacket at the back of the neck.

I’m no clothing designer, but I do wonder if a smarter solution couldn’t be found to prevent this problem – perhaps just a couple of simple buttons which you could use to keep the hood in place when it’s not in use.

Pockets

There are two deep hand pockets on this jackets, which have button seals. I was a bit surprised that buttons were used rather than zips, but after wearing it about, I think it was a good decision from the Helly Hansen team. The pockets are well-protected and have these kind of flaps on the inside which helps to keep water out while keep the contents in, with the buttons just providing a final level of protection. Have buttons rather than zips makes it more comfortable to pop your hands inside.

If you want a more secure pocket, there’s also a zipped pocket on the chest which is big enough for a phone.

Helly Hansen Hooded Rain Jacket Summary

All-in-all, I’m a big fan of this jacket. I’ve had several other waterproof jackets before, but rarely do I actually want to wear them unless I’m expecting rain. This one, on the otherhand, still looks like a really nice jacket that I’m happy to wear in a range of social settings, while also being extremely comfortable and breathable to wear. For me, I’m find it to be an ideal jacket for spring – but it would also be great for rainy summer days.

Obviously, Helly Hansen gear isn’t cheap and this jacket is no different as it will set you back a solid £160. But if you want one really good rain jacket that actually looks good, then I’d really recommend Helly Hansen’s Ride Hooded Rain Jacket.
